Methods are provided for characterizing the stability of a distillate fraction using a quartz crystal microbalance apparatus, such as a distillate fraction derived at least in part from a pre-refined crude oil. A sample can be aged for an aging period in a quartz crystal microbalance apparatus, and a frequency value for the sample in the quartz crystal microbalance apparatus can be determined before and after the aging period to determine a frequency difference. This frequency difference can be correlated directly with the ability of a jet fuel fraction to satisfy a stability test standard, such as a jet fuel breakpoint stability. The methods can also include using a temperature profile during characterization that can reduce or minimize operator error during the characterization.

Quartz crystal characterization of fractions derived from cracked streams

This invention relates to a process for improving the yield and properties of jet fuel from a kerosene feed. More particularly, a kerosene feedstock is hydrotreated and dewaxed using a ZSM-48 catalyst to produce a jet fuel in improved yield and having improved properties.

Process to improve jet fuels

It has been discovered that jet fuel containing enhanced thermal stability additives and water can be delivered with a final water content of 15 ppm or less via existing jet fuel distribution system by controlling the fuel flow rate through the fuel delivery system comprising one or more filter coalescers and separator systems, said controlled fuel flow rate being determined by passing a sample of actual fuel through a sample of the fuel filter at various fuel flow rates to identify the flowrate at which the fuel effluent contains 15 ppm or less.

Diesel fuels which have good ignition qualities, good combustion emission performance and good low temperature characteristics are characterized by a cetane number of at least 45, a total aromatics content of 10 to 15 wt. pct., a polynuclear aromatics content of less than 11 wt. pct., a sulfur content of not more than 50 ppmw, a total nitrogen content (from all sources) of not more than 100 ppmw, and excellent low temperature flow properties as manifested by a pour point not higher than -12.degree. C. and a cloud point not higher than -10.degree. C.

A pH tolerant aqueous gel-forming composition for placement within a subterranean formation. The composition includes water, a viscosifying amount of a heteropolysaccharide prepared by growing Xanthomonas campestris NCIB 11854 in an aqueous nutrient medium by aerobic fermentation and recovering the heteropolysaccharide, and a crosslinking agent for the heteropolysaccharide in an amount sufficient to cause gelation of the aqueous solution of the Xanthomonas compestris NCIB 11854 heteropolysaccharide. Also described is a two-stage gel-forming composition for use in controlling the profile of a subterranean formation.

pH tolerant heteropolysaccharide gels for use in profile control

The 350.degree.-650.degree. F. (177.degree.-343.degree. C.) portion of the product from the oligomerization of light olefin with surface deactivated shape selective medium pore zeolite catalyst particles comprises olefinic hydrocarbons having unique and desirable structures as precursors for high cetane value clean fuels. These oligomers are near linear in structure and contain no aromatics. Following hydrogenation they produce cetane values between 50 and 75. When the near linear olefinic hydrocarbons from surface deactivated zeolite catalyzed oligomerization of light olefins are subjected to ethene metathesis to alpha olefins and oligomerization following the process of Chen et al in U.S. Pat. No. 4,962,249 the overall process reaction product comprises a mixture of a 650.degree. F.+ portion comprising high VI lubricant and a 350.degree.-650.degree. F. portion comprising high cetane clean fuels precursor. Hydrogenation of the 350.degree.-650.degree. F. portion provides an aromatics-free fuel with a cetane value between 50-75 containing less than 0.5 wt % naphthenes. The combined process results in the co-production of high cetane clean fuels and high VI synthetic lubricant.

Process for the production of high cetane value clean fuels

A method for imparting selectivity to an in-situ gel-forming composition for placement within a subterranean oil-bearing formation having relatively high permeability zones and relatively low permeability zones, comprising the steps of: preparing an aqueous-based mixture, the mixture comprising: a first stage gel-forming composition in an amount effective to selectively enter the relatively high permeability zones of the formation, the first stage composition including a heteropolysaccharide prepared by growing Xanthomonas campestris NCIB 11854 in an aqueous nutrient medium by aerobic fermentation and recovering the heteropolysaccharide and a crosslinking agent for the heteropolysaccharide; and at least one second stage in-situ gel-forming composition comprising a water-dispersible polymer and a crosslinking agent for the water-dispersible polymer in an amount effective to form a stable gel; and gelling the first stage gel-forming composition ex-situ by reacting the Xanthomonas campestris NCIB 11854 heteropolysaccharide with the crosslinking agent for the heteropolysaccharide. The mixture so prepared exhibits greater selectivity than would a like mixture in the absence of the first stage selective gel-forming composition.

The permeability of a subterranean oil-bearing formation is controlled by the injection of an aqueous solution of a cross-linked block copolymer containing polar and non-polar segments, with the polar segments generally making up as least 50 percent, usually 60 to 99 percent, of the copolymer. The polar segments are derived from an alkylene oxide and the non-polar segments from styrene or an alkyl styrene either by itself or with a diene. The copolymers are cross-linked with an amino resin or a combination of a phenolic and a water-dispersible aldehyde component. The resulting copolymer gels are stable at low pH conditions, such as those of CO.sub.2 flood conditions.
