Reactive treatment cells (RTCs) are described in combination with sediment capping systems as a means for environmental remediation. RTCs include an impermeable housing defining an interior, a permeable ceiling and floor typically including filtration materials such as geotextiles, and at least one interior compartment for treatment reagents. One RTC includes a gabion-like cage structure retaining a geomembrane-supported geosynthetic clay liner (GM-GCL) housing, while a second embodiment includes a hard, cylindrical shell as a replaceable reagent cartridge. RTCs may be employed in initial capping system installations or retrofitted into existing capping systems. RTCs may include optional baffles, flow restrictors, floating discs, sensor probes, and two or more serial reagent zones or compartments.

Reactive treatment cell and systems for environmental remediation

Residuals, such as slag particles, from iron- and/or steel-making, and/or water-leached eluates thereof, are added directly to a conventional or multi-staged anaerobic digester or other sewage sludge or biosolid handling process. The slag particles or other residuals sorb, sequester, immobilize, or otherwise promote the removal of phosphorus and/or sulfur from wastewater, sludge, or biosolids being treated, such that the associated aqueous phase concentrations of phosphorus and sulfur are significantly reduced.

Sequestration of macronutrients from anaerobic wastewater treatment with iron- and steel-making slags

Generating ferrate ex situ by activating persulfate with BOF steel slag fines and/or ferric iron. A persulfate solution flows therethrough or thereover the BOF steel slag within, for example, a filter, fluidized bed or continuously stirred tank reactor. The ex situ generation will produce a leachate that contains multiple reactive oxidant species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide (HO), superoxide (O2.), sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals (OH.) and uniquely ferrate species including Fe IV, V and VI. These ROS will destroy organic compounds, sterilize, and can oxidize inorganics and a wide range of targeted contaminants in distressed water (e.g., drinking water, process water, wastewater, industrial process streams/waters, municipal process streams/waters, landfill leachate, sewage/septic systems, bilge waters, drilling fluids, mine effluents). The use of BOF steel slag avoids the need for additional pH buffers and ferrate stabilizers and is an industrial byproduct comprised of recycled materials instead of a specialized reagent.

Ex situ ferrate generation

The present invention relates generally to multi-layered reflective insulating composites and a method of fabricating those composites. The present invention comprises a multi-layered reflective insulation system comprising a first protective layer; a first scattering optic layer; microsphere film layers; a polyblend foam layer; a second scattering optic layer; and a second protective layer. The present invention also comprises a method of manufacture of a multi-layered reflective insulation system comprising a first protective layer; a first scattering optic layer; microsphere film layers; a polyblend foam layer; a second scattering optic layer; a second protective layer; securably disposing the layers on top of each other; and securably attaching the layers. The multi-layered reflective insulation system provides a cost-effective and efficient insulation system.

Disclosed herein is an insert device for semi-dynamic leach testing, the insert device including a support and an absorptive polymer disposed on the support, the insert device characterized by a sheet-like form having a first and second major side. The device is useful in testing of both radial and unidirectional leaching of organic compounds into water from solid samples.

Semi-dynamic leach test device and methods of making and using

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a water pumping system. More specifically, embodiments of the present invention are directed to a solar electric powered, siphon-capable water pumping systems specifically configured for use in rooftop and other applications having similar need and conditions. Advantageously, a water pumping system configured in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention is configured to prevent pooling of water in low-lying areas of a roof and thereby limits the potential for damage to the roof and underlying structure that could otherwise result from such pooling of the water.

The lower end (,) of the light tube (,) extends to the inside of the ceiling and sits on the plaster ring (,). The upper end (,) of the light tube (,) is reciprocally received in the flashing (,), but the outer dome (,) attaches directly to the flashing (,).

Method and apparatus for a tubular skylight system

The present invention includes an improved tubular skylight system having a clear acrylic outer dome, an aluminum flashing, an aluminum light tube, an aluminum ceiling plaster ring, and a prismatic diffuser. The outer dome includes an aluminum ring around the base of the dome which contains a circular channel and holes which provide for increased heat dissipation and condensation removal. The aluminum ring allows the outer acrylic dome to be attached directly to the flashing thereby substantially decreasing the risk of crack formation in the acrylic dome. Moreover, the surface of the acrylic dome is imprinted to refract, a substantially increased amount of the natural light down into the light tube. The lower end of the light tube extends to the inside surface of the ceiling thereby substantially increasing the dispersion of the light rays entering the building. The lower end of the light tube also sits on the plaster ring thereby substantially reducing the accessability of dust, water and bugs inside the building. The upper end of the light tube is reciprocally received into the flashing, but the outer dome attaches directly to the flashing. Consequently, the light tube 'floats' inside the flashing thereby providing a more flexible system to compensate for 'roof sag.' Moreover, the floating light tube allows the manipulation of the flashing (i.e., to replace shingles) without the need to disassemble the entire system.
