Propagation modes within a corrugated optical waveguide are used to excite fluorescence from a layer of material which defines a wall of the waveguide. The fluorescence is emitted at discrete angles, which are a function of the wavelength and polarization of the emitted fluorescence. The intensity of fluorescence detected at the discrete angles of detection can approach 2000 times the intensity detected from the same fluorescence material coated on a glass slide. These features enable a number of tests to be performed simultaneously on an unknown sample, as well as providing a finer and more accurate determination of concentration of a substance over prior art systems.

An efficient solid state light emitting device wherein sulphur is used to provide isoelectronic centers in silicon which bind excitons which emit light at a wavelength of 1.32 microns (um) and are particularly adapted for use in integrated opto-electronic circuits and in launching optical signals in single mode optical fibers.

Silicon based light emitting devices

Fluorescence enhancement is obtained using an optical waveguide consisting essentially of films of fluorescent molecules and of conductive material separated by a dielectric layer. The enhancement is believed to be due to the near field interaction between the molecules of the fluorescent material and the waveguide modal fields. No special couplers (prisms or gratings) are needed between the fluorescent material and the waveguide. The enhancement factor is in excess of two orders of magnitude over fluorescence from the material without the use of the waveguide.
