The use of isocyanate-functional prepolymers containing from recurring poly(ethylene oxide) units and colloidal silica in two-pack polyurethane compositions not only increases the flexibility of high build coatings prepared from such compositions but is also effective in controlling the mixed viscosity.

High build, ambient cure coating compositions

Articles of commerce which are transparent at a first temperature and less transparent at a second temperature which is different from said first temperature and which are capable of reverting to the original state of transparency are obtained by curing compositions containing at least one isocyanate-functional monomeric or polymeric material which may or may not contain hydrophilic centers consisting essentially of ethylene oxide units having the structure (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n, wherein n is at least two. When the isocyanate-functional material does not contain such hydrophilic centers, it must be cured in the presence of at least one monomeric or polymeric material which may or may not be reactive with isocyanate groups but must contain such hydrophilic centers. Thermosensitivity is imparted to the cured products by the presence of water in the cured material.

Thermally-responsive polymeric materials

The incorporation of water in amounts insufficient to form a stable water-in-oil emulsion is effective to reduce the viscosity of radiation-curable compositions containing at least one olefinically unsaturated polymeric material.

Radiation-curable compositions

Energy-curable compositions can be cured in the presence of oxygen by exposure to actinic radiation employing as a photocatalyst system an essentially homogeneous admixture of (1) at least one compound which permits free radical polymerization through bimolecular photochemical reactions of the energy donor or energy transfer type, the hydrogen abstraction type, or by the formation of a donor-acceptor complex with monomers or additives leading to ionic or radical species; and (2) at least one photoinitiator selected from the group consisting of organic peroxide compounds which have as an identifying and critical feature at least one carbonyl group directly bonded through a carbon-oxygen bond to a peroxy oxygen atom.

Actinic radiation curable formulations

Radiation-curable compositions are described comprising at least one olefinically unsaturated polymeric material, at least one unsaturated diluent monomer which is copolymerizable with the polymeric material and water. The compositions are readily cured in oxygen-containing and inert environments upon exposure to actinic or ionizing irradiation to a finish having a desired light-scattering effect.

Energy curable compositions which can be cured in the presence of air by exposure to actinic radiation contain at least one unsaturated urethane oligomer, said oligomer comprising the reaction product of at least one unsaturated active hydrogen-containing compound; at least one polyisocyanate; and at least one polyetherester, said polyetherester having in its main chain the residue of at least one poly(alkylene oxide) polyol.

Unsaturated addition-polymerizable urethane resins prepared from at least one polyisocyanate, at least one monomeric or polymeric polyol, and at least one unsaturated addition-polymerizable monomeric organic compound characterized by the presence of a single isocyanate-reactive active hydrogen group, wherein said polyol has a hydroxyl functionality of at least 2.1, and the amount of polyisocyanate is sufficient to provide an NCO:OH ratio, with respect to said polyol, of at least 2.1:1, are characterized by reduced viscosity, improved physical stability, and by improved solubility and compatibility in organic solvents/diluents. Particularly advantageous resins are obtained by employing isocyanate-functional prepolymers as precursors for such unsaturated addition-polymerizable urethane resins.

Unsaturated addition-polymerizable urethane resins prepared from polyester polyols based on (1) at least one glycol selected from the group consisting of 1,3-butylene glycol and neopentyl glycol; (2) adipic acid; (3) isophthalic acid; and, optionally, (4) at least one aliphatic polyhydroxy compound containing at least three hydroxy groups are characterized by reduced viscosity, improved physical stability, and by improved solubility and compatibility in organic solvents/diluents. Particularly advantageous resins are obtained by employing isocyanate-functional prepolymers based on the subject polyester polyols, with isocyanate-functional prepolymers obtained by reacting the polyester polyol compounds with organic polyisocyanate compounds at an NCO:OH ratio greater than 2:1 being especially preferred, as precursors for such unsaturated addition-polymerizable urethane resins.
