A directional access network can include a plurality of nodes and wireless links between ones of the nodes. Topology management of the network can discover when network fragmentation exists, identify nodes positioned to heal the fragmentation, and establish new active links between the identified nodes.

Directional access network control system and method

In accordance with one embodiment of the invention a method for reliable data communications system in a communications system is provided. The method comprises determining a desired data rate and determining a power level required to transceive at the desired data rate. The method includes determining a channel selection function and determining the power necessary to transceive on the selected channel given the desired data rate and the associated power necessary for that data rate. The method also includes a channel monitoring function for monitoring data communications once communications has been established and a channel search method if communications has been degraded.

Method for autonomous frequency management for reliable data communications

A signal transmission system comprising a transmitter, a rotating transmitting antenna connected to the transmitter, a receiver, and a receiving antenna connected to the receiver. A controller connected to the transmitter is adapted to control the transmitter based upon a location of the receiving antenna relative to the transmitting antenna. The controller is also adapted to limit a transmission of signals from the transmitter to when a predetermined beam pattern of the transmitting antenna is at least partially aligned with the receiving antenna.

Communication system having a rotating directional antenna

A novel vector quantization encoding system comprises a conventional vector formatter and a novel gross quantizer. The vector formatter generates vectors to be searched in a full code book of vectors. The gross quantizer generates pointers indicative of subsets of vector indices. The vector indices are indicative of groups of vectors to be searched in the full code book that are substantially less in number than the number of vectors in the full code book. A search controller is employed to search only the subset of vectors in the full code book and produce as an output the index of the one vector in the full code book closest to the formatted vector being searched so that the quality of a full code book searched is made faster without degradation of a full code book search.

Method and apparatus for increasing the speed of a full code book search

A first set of input index signals represents a row-column array of quantized pixels; and each input index signal in the first set represents a rectangular non-overlapping quantized pixel group which is aligned to a particular row and a particular column. By repeatedly performing three steps on different pairs of the input index signals in the first set, a second set of index signals is generated wherein a respective index signal exists for each individual pixel in the array and by which the image can be filtered. These three steps are: 1) selecting a pair of input index signals in the first set such that the two quantized pixel groups which the selected index signals represent are adjacent to each other in the array; 2) forming an address signal by combining the two selected input index signals; and 3) reading a memory with the address signal to thereby obtain an output index signal. That output index signal represents an overlapping group of pixels which--a) consist of pixels from the two adjacent quantized pixel groups, and b) have been requantized.

Method of electronically processing a quantized image

An apparatus for detecting the presence of a target in an n-dimensional array of digital data samples comprises: 1) a reading module, which reads the samples from the data array in overlapping groups; 2) a quantizing module, coupled to the reading module, which quantizes each of the overlapping groups of data samples and which generates an index that identifies the quantized group; and 3) a comparing module, coupled to the quantizing module, which compares indexes from the quantizing module to multiple reference indexes, each of which represents a quantized group of data samples that identify a distinctive feature of the target.

Target recognition using quantization indexes

High speed computing apparatus for performing real time data compression of analog voice data or digital data to be transmitted over a data link. The incoming data stream is divided into blocks of digital data and the blocks are subdivided into digital samples or elements to be compressed. Each sample is analyzed individually to determine its estimated variance and the marginal return to be gained by alloting the sample one or more of the bits to be employed to define the block of digital data. The bits are assigned samples having the highest estimated variance factor so that an optimum allocation of bits to individual samples is achieved with variable ratio data compression. The allocated bits are employed to encode the samples during real time data compression and transmission.
