This current disclosure is directed to charge-transfer heptamethine dyes for NIR singlet oxygen generation, each such dye comprising a near-infrared (NIR) absorbing dye having heptamethine linkages orthogonally coupled to an optionally substituted cationic heteroaryl ring moiety as a charge-transfer partner and uses thereof.

Methods and compositions modulate the activity of electrically excitable cells. Photovoltaic compounds which, upon exposure to light energy, increase or decrease the electrical activity of cells. These supplement and/or replace of vision based on the conversion of light energy to electrical energy within certain cells of the visual system. The exposure induces an energy (e.g., a receipt of light energy, conversion to electrical energy, and passage of that electrical energy) from the photovoltaic compound to the cell, thereby altering the transmembrane potential of the cell and/or the opening of one or more ion channels, thereby modulating the activity of the electrically excitable cell.

A precursor route to the synthesis of polyacetylene and other conductive polymers is provided by the formation of high energy polymers by ring opening metathesis polymerization. In particular, the high energy polymers having the following general formula are formed from monomers as shown: ##STR1## In the formula, A is an organic structure that is relieved of strain upon the ring opening polymerization and B is an organic structure with strain energy.gtoreq.20 kcal/mole. Such high energy polymers are also found to be spontaneously decomposable with heat or mechanical stress. Consequently, the high energy polymers formed in accordance with the invention may find use in explosives or other sources of high energy.
