A microstrip antenna (10) comprises a planar antenna radiating element (12) having at least a first major surface and a ground plane having a first major surface (16), a second major surface (18), and a third major surface (20) substantially parallel to each other. A dielectric material (14) is positioned between the planar antenna radiating element and the ground plane. The microstrip antenna further includes a first gap (36) between the first major surface (18) of the ground plane and the second major surface (16) of the ground plane and a second gap (72) between the second major surface (16) of the ground plane and the third major surface (20) of the ground plane, wherein the first and second gaps create an increased impedance bandwidth and a lower operating frequency antenna.

An antenna (100) has a connector (200) having a ground lead (102) and a signal lead (114). A dielectric (112) captures and embeds the connector (200) forming a connector substrate assembly (120) having a first side (122) and a second opposite side (124). A first conductive material (104) is affixed to the first side (122) of the connector substrate assembly (120) and coupling to the ground lead (102) and a second conductive material (110) is affixed to the second opposite side (124) of the connector substrate assembly (112) coupling the signal lead (114).

Molded patch antenna having an embedded connector and method therefor

An antenna has a quarter wave resonant strip (10) and first and second parasitically excited strips (12 and 14) resonant at a lower and upper frequency, respectively, of the antenna bandwidth. The strips (10, 12 and 14) have trim tabs (20, 22 and 24) for adjusting the resonant frequency of each strip. The location of a feed (30) is set to provide a desired impedance match for use by a radio (60) such as a pager. A ground plane (40) provides a grounding for the strips (10, 12 and 14) and inhibits undesirable radio frequency interaction between the radio (60) and the strips (10, 12 and 14).
