Devices for cerebral and systemic cooling via a patient's nasopharyngeal cavity are described. Cooling assemblies include at least one elongate tubular member having first and second lumens, a source of liquid coolant, a gas source communicating with the first lumen, and a switch for alternately connecting the liquid coolant source to the second lumen. The first lumen transports a compressed gas and the second lumen transports a volatile liquid. The pressurized fluid may be a perfluorocarbon. The perfluorocarbon may be perfluorohexane, perfluoropentane, or 2-methyl-perfluoropentane. The gas may be air, oxygen, or a combination.

Methods and devices for non-invasive cerebral and systemic cooling alternating liquid mist/gas for induction and gas for maintenance

Methods are provided for partial aortic obstruction for cerebral perfusion augmentation in patients suffering from global or focal cerebral ischemia. Alternatively, the methods can be used to partially obstruct aortic blood flow to condition the spinal cord to secrete neuroprotective agents prior to abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Partial obstruction of a vessel can be accomplished by a device comprising an elongate catheter and a distally mounted expandable member. The expandable member may comprise one or two balloons. Other medical devices, such as an angioplasty, stent, or atherectomy catheter, can be inserted distal the expandable member to provide therapeutic intervention.

Partial aortic occlusion devices and methods for cerebral perfusion augmentation

Methods for cerebral cooling are described. Cooling assemblies include elongate tubular members, a reservoir containing a pressurized fluid, and a manifold connecting the reservoir and elongate tubular members. After insertion of the elongate tubular members into the patient's nostrils, a pressurized fluid is delivered onto a surface of the patient's nasal cavity through a plurality of ports in the elongate tubular members. The delivery of the fluid causes cooling by direct heat transfer through the nasopharynx and hematogenous cooling through the carotids and the Circle of Willis.

Methods and devices for non-invasive cerebral and systemic cooling

Methods of using a medical device having catheter with one or more expandable constricting/occluding members for preventing distal embolization during extracranial or intracranial carotid procedures or vertebral artery procedures by augmenting collateral cerebral circulation by coarctation of the aorta to enhance reversal of blood flow in an internal carotid artery, an external carotid artery, and/or a common carotid artery are disclosed. An interventional catheter can also be advanced into a right cerebral artery and a procedure performed on a lesion in the right cerebral artery.

Devices and methods for preventing distal embolization using flow reversal and perfusion augmentation within the cerebral vasculature

Methods for cerebral and systemic cooling via a patient's nasopharyngeal cavity are described. In one method, a cooling assembly is inserted into a nasal cavity through a patient's nostril. A substantially dry gas is delivered through a lumen of the catheter onto the surface of the patient's nasal cavity. Evaporative heat loss cools the patient's nasal cavity. If additional cooling is needed, a liquid coolant is delivered through a separated lumen of the catheter. The liquid coolant is nebulized at a plurality of delivery ports on the distal end of the catheter and is delivered onto the surface of the patient's nasal cavity in combination with the dry gas. The dry gas enhances evaporation of the nebulized coolant and additional cooling is provided from the evaporative heat loss of the liquid coolant.

A system for improving outcome following cerebral ischemia is provided. The system includes a source of nitric oxide and an elongate tubular member for insertion into a nose including at least one orifice thereon. The elongate tubular member is coupled to the source of nitric oxide and configured for delivering the nitric oxide into a nasal cavity through the at least one orifice for absorption into a cerebral vasculature through a nasal vasculature. A device for controlling flow of the gas, a concentration of the nitric oxide in the gas, or both, is also provided.

The devices generally comprise a mesh for filtering blood flowing within a blood vessel, particularly within an artery such as the aorta, a structure adapted to open and close the mesh within the blood vessel, and a device or method to actuate the structure. The methods generally include the steps of introducing a mesh into a blood vessel to entrap emboli material, and removing the mesh and the entrapped foreign matter from the blood vessel.

A method for providing and adjusting cerebral cooling in response to changes in a physiological parameter. A spray having a boiling point between 38-300&#xb0; C. is delivered to the surface of a patient's nasal cavities. The spray causes cooling by direct heat transfer through the nasopharynx and hematogenous cooling through the carotids and the Circle of Willis. A physiological parameter, such as cerebral temperature, changes in cerebral blood flow or brain oxygenation is monitored. The delivery rate of the spray is adjusted in response to the physiological parameter.

A method for cerebral and systemic cooling by providing a nebulized liquid having a boiling point of 38-300&#xb0; C. The nebulized liquid is delivered as a mist or a spray via the nasal and/or oral cavities of a patient. The mist causes cooling by direct heat transfer through the nasopharynx and hematogenous cooling through the carotids and the Circle of Willis. Compositions and medical devices for cerebral and systemic cooling are also provided. Cooling assemblies, and methods of use, are also provided that include flexible balloon assemblies that are inserted to various locations in a patient's body. The flexible balloons are then infused with a liquid having a temperature between about &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. and about 37&#xb0; C. The flexible balloon assemblies can be inserted into the nasal cavity, oral cavity, throat, stomach, and other locations to effect cerebral cooling.

Methods for treating a migraine by cooling a patient's nasopharyngeal cavity are described. In one method, a cooling assembly is inserted into a nasal cavity through a patient's nostril. The cooling assembly includes a flexible balloon defining a chamber and a first elongate tubular member having a lumen in fluid communication with the chamber. A liquid having a temperature between about &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. and about 37&#xb0; C. is infused through the lumen of the first elongate tubular member into the chamber, wherein the flexible balloon expands to place it in contact with the nasal cavity. In another method, an elongate member having a plurality of ports is inserted into the nasal cavity. A perfluorocarbon spray and a gas are then delivered onto a surface of the nasal cavity through the plurality of ports.

Methods and devices for treatment of migraines

A method for cerebral and systemic cooling by circulating a cold liquid through a nasal catheter looped through the patient's nasal cavities and around the nasal septum. The nasal catheter is inserted into the patient's first nostril, advanced through the nasal cavity, around the nasal septum and out of the patient's second nostril. A cold fluid having a temperature between about &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. and about 37&#xb0; C. is flowed though a lumen in the nasal catheter to cool the nasal cavity. The nasal catheter may have one or more flexible balloons mounted on the catheter such that when the catheter is looped around the nasal septum, the balloon(s) are positioned in a portion of the patient's first and second nasal cavities. When a cold liquid is circulated through the catheter lumen, the flexible balloons expand to a contact the inner walls of the nasal cavities and provide direct cooling of the nasal cavities.

Methods and devices for non-invasive cerebral and systemic cooling via the nasal cavity

The invention provides a medical device having a catheter and one or more expandable constricting/occluding members. The catheter has a lumen communicating with a port at its distal end. The lumen and port are adapted for introduction of therapeutic or diagnostic devices, including an angioplasty/stent catheter and an atherectomy catheter, into a vertebral or basilar artery. The constrictor/occluder is mounted proximal to the port of the catheter. Manometers may be mounted distal to one or more constrictors for measuring pressure distal to the constrictor(s). Methods of using the devices for preventing distal embolization during vertebral and/or basilar procedures by reversing blood flow in the vertebral artery toward the subclavian artery are disclosed.

Devices and methods for preventing distal embolization from the vertebrobasilar artery using flow reversal

Methods are described for augmenting cerebral blood flow and altering sympathetic nerve firing and catecholamine release by cooling a part of the body. In particular localized cooling of the nose or mouth is used to augment cerebral blood flow and alter sympathetic nerve firing. By cooling a localized area such as nose or mouth, release of norepinephrine after an ischemic event is inhibited. The methods described may be applied to augment cerebral blood flow and alter catecholamine release, particularly in treatment of stroke, heart attack and transient ischemic event.
