The new water-soluble substance designated by the number 41,200 RP, is obtained from cells of Micrococcus sedogenes, M 78 strain (NRRL B-3505), and is particularly useful in human or veterinary therapy for increasing resistance to infections of various origins and for stimulating the natural defences of the organism.

The glycopeptide 31,177 RP is prepared by cultivating under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium Streptomyces calidus DS 26,320 (NRRL 8141), a hitherto unknown microorganism. 31,177 RP is of interest as an inhibitor of glyco-hydrolases, e.g. the amylases, the maltases or the saccharases, particularly those of the digestive tract.

The invention relates to novel water-soluble compounds, process for their preparation, methods of therapeutic treatment therewith and pharmaceutical compositions containing them. The compounds correspond to the formulae (III) and (IV) below or their mixtures in molar proportions of about 4/1, in which formulae X represents a RCO radical and Y represents a hydrogen atom or a RCO radical, or again in which Y represents a RCO radical and X represents a hydrogen atom or a RCO radical, R being an alkyl or alkenyl radical containing 11 to 19 carbon atoms in a straight or branched chain. ##STR1## The compounds are useful as immunological adjuvants.

Novel water-soluble compounds derived from extracts of streptomyces

The new antifungal agents 32232 RP and 35391 RP having the probable formulae: ##STR1## respectively, are prepared by cultivating the hitherto unknown microorganism Streptomyces incarnatus DS 26068 (NRRL 8089), under aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium to obtain 32232 RP which can be converted into the lactam 35391 RP.

The new antibiotic designated 19,402 R.P. - an acid - is obtained by the cultivation of the microorganism ' Streptomyces 6227' or 'Streptomyces peruviensis' NRRL 2757, the characteristics of which are described in British Patent No. 846,801. The antibiotic and its alkali metal salts are particularly active against gram-positive microorganisms.
