A data unit is received at a first one of a plurality of network devices associated with a first one of the plurality of link aggregate groups. A hashing function is applied to the data unit to generate a first hash value, where the first hash value identifies a communication link in the first one of the plurality of link aggregate groups. The data unit is received at a second one of the plurality of network devices associated with a second one of the plurality of link aggregate groups. The hashing function is applied to the data unit to generate a second hash value that is distinct from the first value, where the second hash value identifies a communication link in a second one of the plurality of link aggregate groups along which the data unit is to be communicated.

Hash computation for network switches

A method for load balancing in a communication network having a plurality of link aggregate groups includes receiving a data unit at a first one of the plurality of network devices associated with a first one of the plurality of link aggregate groups, applying a hashing function to the data unit to generate a first hash value, where the first hash value identifies a communication link in the first one of the plurality of link aggregate groups, receiving the data unit at a second one of the plurality of network devices associated with a second one of the plurality of link aggregate groups, and applying the hashing function to the data unit to generate a second hash value that is distinct from the first value, where the second hash value identifies a communication link in the second one of the plurality of link aggregate groups along which the data unit is to be communicated.

Data units that are fragments of a larger data unit are received at a network device. A first received fragment of the larger data unit is processed to determine a port of the network device via which the larger data unit is to be transmitted based on a first received fragment of the larger data unit and prior to receiving all of the fragments of the larger data unit. After processing the first received fragment, processing of second received fragments for the purpose of determining the port of the network device via which the larger data unit is to be transmitted is skipped. The larger data unit is reassembled from all of the fragments of the larger data unit after determination of the port of the network device via which the larger data unit is to be transmitted. The larger data unit is forwarded to the port for transmission.

Methods for reassembling fragmented data units

Aspects of the disclosure provide a method for processing packet with a reduced hardware cost. The method for processing packet can include selecting a group of parameter ranges based on information contained within a packet, determining a search key based on the packet and whether a parameter of the packet is within one or more of the parameter ranges, determining a rule based on the search key corresponding to the packet and the group of parameter ranges, and executing an action that is associated with the rule on the packet. In addition, the disclosure provides an apparatus for processing packet. Further, the disclosure provides a packet switching device that can apply policy on a packet based on parameters of the packet and ranges among a group of ranges, within which a parameter of the packet belongs.

Method and apparatus for packet processing

Aspects of the disclosure can provide a network switch having reduced power consumption. The network switch can include a plurality of ports that are configured to receive and transmit network traffic. The plurality of ports can be configured in a power-on mode and a power-off mode. Further, at least a first port among the plurality of ports can be configured to remain in the power-on mode and to receive power control instructions. In addition, the network switch can include a power controller. The power controller can change the power modes of selected ports among the plurality of ports in response to the power control instructions received through the first port.

Method and apparatus for power reduction in network

An apparatus includes a receive port unit, a forwarding engine, a transmit port unit, and a reassembly unit. In an embodiment, the packet reassembly unit examines headers in received fragments of a data unit and using the headers to reassemble the data unit, wherein the headers correspond to a protocol layer above an IP-layer. In another embodiment, the packet reassembly unit is located downstream from the forwarding engine in a packet forwarding pipeline, and the forwarding engine skips processing fragments received subsequent to a first received fragment.

Apparatus for reassembling a fragmented data unit and transmitting the reassembled data unit

Aspects of the disclosure provide a method for reducing power consumption in a network switch. The method includes detecting a traffic load on a network link system coupled to the network switch. The network switch can include a first power consumption configuration providing a first link capacity for the network link system, and a second power consumption configuration, which is lower than the first power consumption configuration, providing a second link capacity that is lower than the first link capacity. The method further includes determining whether the traffic load on the network link is lower than a first boundary threshold, and reconfiguring the network switch from the first power consumption configuration into the second power consumption configuration if the traffic load is lower than the first boundary threshold.

Aspects of the disclosure provide an improved method for processing a packet transmitted on a network. The method for processing the packet can include defining a set of non-overlapped intervals on a range field, defining one or more range rules that each range rule is in association with a subset of the non-overlapped intervals, identifying a non-overlapped interval, to which a parameter of the packet belongs, and executing an action on the packet based on a range rule associated with the non-overlapped interval to which the parameter belongs.
