A catalyst for hydrotreating and/or hydroconverting heavy metal-containing hydrocarbon feeds, comprises a support in the form of mainly irregular and non-spherical alumina-based agglomerates the specific shape. The catalyst is prepared by a specific order of steps: crushing, calcining, acidic autoclaving, drying, further calcining and impregnation with catalytic metals.

The invention relates to a process for sulfurization of catalysts for hydrotreatment, in particular the catalysts for hydrotreating refractory oxides by sulfurization, in which said catalysts are subjected to a sulfurization stage under a gas atmosphere that contains hydrogen sulfide (HS), hydrogen (H), and optionally a cover gas for dilution and in which the HS/Hmolar ratio is more than 4 and the HS partial pressure is at least equal to 1 kPa.
