A shim for a compression mold for manufacturing a component from reinforced plastic, typically from SMC, comprising a fixed molding element, a mobile molding element, and a mobile shim that can be moved by an actuator. The mobile shim comprises a conventional part made of steel but also a part made of a high expansion material with a mean coefficient of expansion that is high enough that its own expansion at the molding temperature places the shim in compression against the molding element and seals against this element, thus eliminating flash on the molded part. This material is advantageously a polyetheretherketone, or PEEK. A mold comprising this shim and a compression molding method are also disclosed.

A Motor vehicle wheel arch has a body of thermoplastic material with an opening and a mat closing the opening and fixed to the body by strips of thermoplastic material. A method of making the arch includes injecting the strips onto the mat and allowing them to solidify in contact therewith. An edge is formed on a reduced thickness portion of the strip. In cross-section, the edge thickness relates to the edge width l by a mathematical function f such that:where h is the height of the edge at its junction with the strip.

A method of making a piece of plastic that is painted. The method consists in depositing a &ldquo;peel-off&rdquo; film inside a mold defining the shape of the piece, which film is suitable for being separated easily from the support to which it is fixed, in making the piece by molding over the film, in painting the piece in full, and in removing the film so as to uncover the non-painted portion of the piece.

The cavity of a mold for making a plastics material part is lined using at least two, preferably decorative, pieces of film. The pieces of film are shaped and cut out so as to be accurately juxtaposed in the film cavity. Molten plastics material is introduced into the mold cavity in register with each piece of film in controlled manner so that the front of plastics material flowing within the mold cavity for the purpose of filling it advances within the mold so as to stretch each piece of film in centrifugal manner so that the film is neither displaced nor folded. The fronts of plastics material advancing over each piece of film meet either in locations of the mold where there is no film or else in register with the facing edges of two pieces of films, where appropriate, so that the entire surface of each piece of film is covered in a layer of plastics material. If necessary an additional quantity of molten plastics material is then introduced into the mold cavity so as to fill it completely.
