Air-cooled compact electric lamp

Convection air-cooling of a compact electric discharge lamp unit that is adapted for use as a screw-in energy-conserving substitute for an incandescent-type lamp bulb is enhanced by partitioning the lamp housing into two separate compartments and providing vents and connecting air passageways that direct ambient air through the respective housing compartments along two different paths--thereby cooling the compartments independently of one another. A light source (such as a convoluted low-pressure discharge lamp) is located within one of the compartments and an electrical circuit for energizing the lamp is located in the other compartment. The 'segregated air-flow' mode of cooling prevents heat that is generated by the lamp from being introduced into the compartment that contains the electrical circuit and thus prevents the circuit components from becoming overheated and possibly damaged. This is an important advantage in the case of solid-state type electronic circuits that include components such as electrolytic capacitors and transistors or the like that are heat-sensitive and may fail if they become too hot. In a preferred embodiment the light source comprises a replaceable plug-in fluorescent lamp of triple-U-bent configuration that has a plastic base member with tongue-and-groove elements which permit the fluorescent lamp to be snap-locked into operative relationship with the partition and circuit components of the lamp housing.

A detachable enclosure unit for use at standard watthour meter sockets includes a central housing for carrying auxiliary equipment and an integral mounting extension with a snap-on retainer for adaptive mounting to both ring and ringless sockets. The retainer provides a removable circumferentially disposed flange surface equally accommodating the different types of meter sockets.

A detachable enclosure unit for use at standard watthour meter sockets includes a central housing for carrying auxiliary equipment and a rear adaptive socket attachment assembly having a mounting extension and a retainer ring for adaptive mounting to both ring and ringless sockets. The retainer ring provides a circularly extending and radially disposed surface equally accommodating the different types of meter sockets.

A pushbutton assembly having a key operable actuating plunger. The key operable actuating plunger includes a locking tab insertable in the space between a stop member which secures the actuating plunger in the housing, and a wall portion of a slot in the housing which receives the stop member.

A manually operable switch wherein at least the externally accessible portion of a pivotally mounted actuator member has a spheroidal configuration. An indentation in the spheroidal configuration enables the actuator member to be operated between predetermined angular positions.

An elevator system including an elevator car mounted for movement in a building to serve the floors therein. The elevator system includes control apparatus for selecting the service direction in which the elevator car will proceed from a floor it is serving. A display having an array of electrically energizable elements visually indicates the selected up or down service direction by sequentially energizing the elements to provide a predetermined pattern which moves upwardly, or downwardly, through the array, or which causes a predetermined pattern to lengthen in the upward, or downward direction.

Elevator system

An elevator system including an elevator car mounted for movement in a building to serve the floors therein. The elevator car includes a car call station with a continuously energized light source associated with certain display functions. An emergency source of electrical potential is applied to this light source when the normal source of electrical potential fails, and this light source provides emergency lighting for the elevator car by providing light transmitting portions on the car call station panel and/or by operating electro-optic light valves located on the car call entry station to their light transmitting condition. The electro-optic light valves used for the emergency lighting function may be those utilized for other display purposes during normal operation of the car call entry station, and/or light valves which are only operated during use of the emergency source of electrical potential.
