The present invention is directed to a holder for use in positioning a pulse oximeter sensor in multiple selectable locations relative to a patient's extremities. The holder includes at least one flexible elongate member that is conformable to and, preferably, about a patient's extremity. A connector on the elongate member is utilized to secure the elongate member to the patient's extremity. Additionally, the elongate member's inside surface contains one or more recesses for selectively receiving a sensor and holding that sensor relative to one or more positions on the inside surface of the flexible sensor holder. The inclusion of multiple recesses allows medical personnel flexibility in positioning a medical sensor. In one embodiment, the holder includes two elongate members for conforming about two portions of a patient's extremity to reduce movement between the extremity and a sensor held by the sensor holder.

A two piece probe having a universal probe end and an interconnect cable segment provides for the use of the universal probe end with a variety of different photoplethysmographic devices. The universal probe end includes a detector, a substrate for removably affixing the probe end to a patient, a window or aperture and a connector. The interconnect cable has a connector mated to the connector on the probe end for mechanical and electrical connection of the probe-end to the interconnect cable and the photoplethysmographic monitor. The connector end of the interconnect cable also houses a plurality of emitters which are directed through the window or aperture in the probe end in order to illuminate the patient. The interconnect cable also houses the resistors or other elements which identify the type of probe, monitor manufacturer or actual emitter wavelengths. Alternatively, the emitters may be housed in the main monitor and an optical fiber may be used to direct light to the patient. An electrical conductor transmits light received by the detector back to the photoplethysmographic monitor.

The present invention is directed to an oximeter sensor that may be employed with a variety of oximeter processing and display units. The oximeter sensor includes a plurality of radiation emitting devices that are capable of providing a spectral content that is useful in the correlation of a number of different oximeter processing and display units. The oximeter sensor further includes a plurality of resistors, with each resistor being connected to a different oximeter processing and display unit to permit the particular oximeter processing and display unit to select an appropriate correlation curve.

A method for manufacturing a heat-sealed neo-natal medical monitoring probe requires a pair of light sources and a light detector to be placed between two layers or conformable material used to implement the probe. The layers are designed to be self-aligning when placed in the assembly press for heat-sealing the perimeter of the probe. The heat-sealing process both protects the light sources and detector from fluids and also functions to precisely position and secure these devices.
