A folding device used to fold a cardiac valve is disclosed. Also shown are methods and system for holding and delivering a cardiac valve during implantation. The folding device facilitates folding either a stented or unstented prosthetic valve prior to insertion into a valve annulus. A delivery system is provided to allow a user to measure the patient annulus to select the prosthetic valve size and insert a folded prosthetic valve into a target site. Methods for using the folding device and delivery system are also disclosed.

Method and systems for sizing, folding, holding, and delivering a heart valve prosthesis

Valve holder

A bileaflet prosthetic valve has leaflet pivots symmetrically or centrically located, thereby providing a central opening about twice the size of the two lateral openings. The valve opens from the center outward to provide nonturbulent central flow. The laminar leaflets are curved in cross-section so that the downstream edges of the leaflets are closer to the centerline of the cylindrical support ring when the leaflets are in an opened configuration. This position disposes the leaflets to favor valve closure when reverse flow of blood occurs. As the leaflets move toward a closed position, upstream edges of the leaflets begin to close the lateral openings, but this movement is opposed by blood flowing through these openings thereby providing a force to decelerate the leaflets and cushion their final closing. When the valve is fully closed, a single point of contact between the upstream edge of each leaflet and the support ring leaves a small gap between the support ring and the rest of the upstream edge and prevents the downstream edges from touching each other when they close the central opening.

Central opening curved bileaflet heart valve prosthesis

A prosthetic heart valve of the type that includes an annular support ring and at least one valving member. The valving member includes a pair of rotational members and the annular support ring includes a pair of apertures that each support a releasable insert. The releasable inserts include axle members that have a predefined rotational contact surface and the rotational members include depressions having a predefined rotational support surface. The geometries of the rotational contact surface and rotational support surfaces are such that a substantial point contact of rotation exists when the two surfaces are rotationally engaged. The invention may be conversely practiced with the releasable inserts including a depression and the rotational members including axle members.
