Provided herein are phase separation devices and methods for performing phase separation of an aqueous mixture. Said devices and methods may include a cavitation component for cavitating the aqueous mixture to produce a cavitated aqueous mixture; and an electrosorption component for performing an electrosorptive phase separation of the cavitated aqueous mixture. Such devices and methods may be used for phase separation of aqueous mixtures including algal aqueous mixtures and/or mining or waste water aqueous mixtures, for example.

Electrosorptive cavitation devices and methods for phase separation

Provided herein are processes for the removal and/or recovery of a target metal from a liquid sample, said process comprising: [1] applying acoustic cavitation to the liquid; and [2] adding an iron (II) salt, or a precursor form thereof, to the liquid sample and allowing Fenton oxidation reaction to occur between the iron and hydrogen peroxide in the liquid, thereby producing hydroxyl radicals; thereby producing a target metal salt or metal oxide having a reduced solubility in the liquid sample, leading to removal of the target metal from the liquid sample. The use of metal ligands in such processes is also described, as well as systems for performing such processes. Methods, processes, and systems for removing organic contaminants from a liquid sample are also described.

Ferro-cavitation processes for target metal separation

The invention relates to an improved mixing arrangement for, primarily, moving bitumen in steam from sources of such bitumen and steam to a reactor or coker for further processing of the bitumen into petroleum products. The invention provides a main conduit connected to an atomizing nozzle mounted in a wall of the reactor and first and second conduits for flowing bitumen and steam respectively into the main conduit. The first conduit is angled relative to the main conduit at an acute angle of about 45&#xb0; and the second conduit is angled relative to the main conduit at an acute angle of about 30&#xb0;. The second conduit is positioned upstream of the first conduit by a short distance of about 23 mm and may be angled radially relative to the first conduit by any angle, although a 90&#xb0; angle is preferred. A flow accelerating nozzle is located in the second conduit adjacent the entrance therefrom into the main conduit The arrangement of the invention improves the flow characteristics of 2-phase material flowing to the atomizing nozzle, reducing pulsations in the main conduit and improving the resulting atomization of the bitumen in the reactor.
