This document describes techniques () and apparatuses () for implementing sensor-based near-field communication (NFC) authentication. These techniques () and apparatuses () enable a computing device () to detect, in a low-power state, environmental variances indicating proximity with an NFC-enabled device () with which to authenticate. In some embodiments, various components of a computing device () in a sleep state are activated to process environmental variance(s), perform authentication operations, and/or an indicate initiation of authentication operations to a user.

Sensor-based near-field communication authentication

This document describes techniques () and apparatuses () for implementing low-power near-field communication (NFC) authentication. These techniques () and apparatuses () enable a computing device () to detect, in a low-power state, an NFC-enabled device () with which to authenticate via NFC. In some embodiments, various components of a computing device () in a sleep state are activated to perform authentication and/or an indication is provided to a user indicating an initiation of the authentication.

Low-power near-field communication authentication

Authenticating users comprises a computing device that receives a manual authentication input of a user and initiates a first user session between the user and the user computing device. The device communicates a request for a first user authorization data from an authentication technology associated with the one or more computing devices and receives the first user authentication data. The user or the device terminates the first user session and subsequently receives an input of the user to initiate a second user session. The device communicates a request for second user authentication data from the authentication technology and compares the first user authentication data and the second user authentication data. The device identifies a match of one or more features of the first user authentication data and one or more features of the second user authentication data and authorizes the user to conduct the second user session.

Allowing access to applications based on user handling measurements

Embodiments are provided for mutually authenticating a pair of electronic devices. According to certain aspects, the electronic devices may connect to each other via an out-of-band communication channel. The electronic devices may each output audio signals and detect audio signals output by the other electronic devices. Based on timestamps associated with audio output and detection events, each of the electronic devices may calculate relevant time and distance parameters, and transmit the calculated parameters to the other electronic device via the out-of-band communication channel. The electronic devices may compare the calculated parameters to determine mutual authentication.

In a first example of 'Body-Area Networking' ('BAN'), a user wishing to access his electronic device ingests a small pill carrying a transmitter. The transmitter's signal carries an identification code that traverses the user's BAN and is read by the device. If the device recognizes that identification code as authenticate, then the device grants the user the desired access. In another example, the user again swallows a transmitter. When the user shakes hands with another person, the signal originating at the ingested transmitter is carried across the BAN of the first user, travels across the handshake to the BAN of the second user, then traverses the second user's BAN to her device. In a third example, a media player transmits audio information across the BAN to a headset worn by the user. The headset receives the signal, demodulates it, and renders the audio to the user.

Number identification and tagging

Systems and methods are provided for identifying keywords for use in targeted advertising. Information concerning a region of interest is derived from data provided by a number of user devices within the region of interest. The information may come from actions such as search queries or communication with other users in the region of interest. In many cases, the information is time sensitive, with the actions occurring within a given timeframe. The time sensitive information for the region of interest is used to derive keywords that are used when selecting advertisements. These advertisements are then provided to users concerning the region of interest. Demographic information may also be used in conjunction with the timeframe and region to further refine the keywords.
