Glass fiber reinforced olefin compositions comprise polypropylene homopolymers, polypropylene copolymers, opacifying pigments, fibrous reinforcers, light stabilizers, lubricants and antioxidants. The opacifying pigments are advantageously ZnO, ZnS or surface treated anatase TiO.

A thermoplastic polymer composition that exhibits substantially isotropic post injection molding shrinkage. The thermoplastic polymer composition includes a blend of highly crystalline polypropylene homopolymer, an ethylene-C&#x3b1;-olefin plastomer and talc having a Dof about 2.0 &#x3bc;m or less. The thermoplastic polymer composition exhibits post injection molding shrinkage, low temperature impact strength and tensile strength that is similar to or better than relatively expensive engineering resins and blends. The thermoplastic polymer composition according to the invention is particularly useful for forming injection molded parts for motor vehicles.

The present invention provides a light reflecting polymeric composition that includes at least one halogenated-flame-retardant-additive-free polymer having dispersed therein a pigment package including a combination of SbOand TiO. The SbOand TiOpreferably have an average particle size within the range of from about 0.05 &#x3bc;m to about 1.0 &#x3bc;m, and more preferably about 0.2 &#x3bc;m. When used in combination, the SbOand TiOpigments synergistically interact together to provide a polymeric composition exhibiting a reflectivity that is substantially higher than can be obtained by the use of either of the pigments alone.

This invention relates to a polymer composition comprising (A) from about 55% to about 75% by weight of at least one polyolefin, (B) from about 2% to about 12% by weight of at least one reaction product of an alpha, beta unsaturated carboxylic reagent and a polyolefin, and (C) from 15% to about 35% by weight of filler. In one aspect, the polymer compositions also include (D) at least one copolymer of ethylene and an olefin, (E) at least one polyamide, or (F) a mixture of (D) and (E). These compositions provide articles and films with improved scratch resistance and hardness. These compositions have improved processing character because their low coefficient of friction.

The present invention provides a method of forming a polymer-wood composite structure and additive systems for use therein. The method of the invention includes extruding a heated mixture that includes from about 20% to about 80% by weight of a thermoplastic polymer, from about 20% to about 80% by weight of a cellulosic filler material, and from about 0.1% to about 10% by weight of an additive system. The additive system according the invention includes a blend of from about 10% to about 90% by weight of a nonionic compatibilizer having an HLB value of from about 9 to about 19 and from about 10% to about 90% by weight of a lubricant. Use of the method and additive system according to the invention facilitates the production of highly filled polymer-wood composite structures at a very high output rate while maintaining commercially acceptable surface appearance. Moreover, the method and additive system according to the invention facilitate the reprocessing of scrap material generated during the production of polymer-wood composite structures without degrading the surface appearance of the polymer-wood composite structures.

The present invention provides a polymer alloy including from about 40% to about 75% by weight of at least one polyamide, from about 10% to about 50% by weight polypropylene, from about 0.01% to about 1.0% by weight of at least one block copolymer including a vinyl aromatic monomer and a conjugated diene, and also includes an unsaturated dicarboxylic reagent, from about 0.1% to about 5.0% by weight of at least one block copolymer or terpolymer, wherein the terpolymer may have an unsaturated dicarboxylic reagent grafted thereto, from about 0.01% to about 7.5% of a compatibilizing agent, and from about 5% to about 50% by weight of a filler. The alloy of the present invention exhibits improved knitline strength and improved drop impact results compared with prior art fiberglass-reinforced nylon blends.

The present invention provides a coextruded multilayer thermoplastic film structure for use in forming a medical fluid container such as an I.V. bag. A coextruded multilayer thermoplastic film structure according to the invention includes at least three layers. The first layer (A), which is the layer that contacts medical fluids such as, for example, saline solutions, lactated Ringers solutions, and the like, includes a mixture of a major part of a homopolymer or copolymer of polypropylene and a minor part of a block polymer of a vinyl aromatic monomer and a conjugated diene, a partially hydrogenated derivative thereof, or a selectively hydrogenated derivative thereof to which has been grafted a unsaturated carboxylic reagent. The second layer (B), which is melt bonded to the first layer (A), includes a block polymer of a vinyl aromatic monomer and a conjugated diene, a partially hydrogenated derivative thereof, or a selectively hydrogenated derivative thereof to which has been grafted a unsaturated carboxylic reagent. The third layer (C), which is melt bonded to the second layer (B), includes a homopolymer or copolymer of polypropylene.

Medical multilayer film structure

The present invention provides an adhesive composition for use in bonding a polymeric fitting to an olefin-containing component of an article used in medical applications. The adhesive composition according to the invention includes an adhesive polymer system dissolved in a solvent system. The solvent system includes an organic solvent having a solubility parameter within the range of from about 7.5 to about 10 (cal/cm ) . Subsequent to forming a bond between the polymeric fitting and the olefin-containing component, the adhesive composition can meet the requirements for USP Class VI materials. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the adhesive composition includes a low shear mixture of an adhesive polymer system including an atactic polypropylene and a low density polyethylene that is dissolved in a solvent system including a blend of d-limonene and a ketone selected from the group consisting of 4-heptanone and cyclohexanone. The adhesive composition can be used, for example, to bond polymeric fittings made of materials such as, but not limited to, acrylic, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, polyolefin, acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene, and polyester, to olefin-containing components of articles used in medical applications such as, but not limited to, tubing.

Adhesive composition primarily intended for use in medical applications

This invention relates to multilayer thermoformable structures comprising a layer (A), a layer (C), and a layer (B) disposed between layers (A) and (C). The multilayer structures and polymer compositions of the invention are useful in preparing thermoformed articles and are particularly useful in preparing medical components such as IV bags. The multilayer structures and the polymer composition have good thermoformability and chemical resistance. A multilayer thermoformable structure according to the invention comprises: a layer (A) of a polymer composition comprising a homopolymer or copolymer of polypropylene; a layer (B) of a polymer composition comprising a homopolymer of polypropylene; and a layer (C) of a polymer composition comprising: (i) from about 45% to about 80% by weight of a homopolymer or copolymer of polypropylene or mixtures thereof; and (ii) from about 15% to about 40% by weight of an ethylene copolymer made using a metallocene catalyst.

Multilayer polymer composite for medical applications

The present invention provides a new and improved flame retarded polyolefin composition that displays good retained physical properties upon aging. The composition also exhibits excellent moldability and it may be easily colored. In a preferred embodiment the composition includes a polyolefin, a halogen-containing flame retardant additive, from at least about 1.00% by weight to about 2.5% by weight of a stabilizer package, and from about 0% to about 1.0% by weight of an acid/halogen scavenger. The stabilizer package includes by weight from about 20% to about 80% of a hindered phenolic antioxidant, from about 20% to about 80% of a phosphite containing antioxidant, and from about 0% to about 40% of a thio-ester antioxidant. In addition to displaying excellent color and physical property development and retention characteristics, the composition of the present invention displays an improved UL94 vertical burn rating.

Flame retarded polyolefin composition

This invention relates to a solvent based adhesive composition including a major amount of a solvent system and a minor amount of an adhesive polymer system. The solvent system preferably includes a terpene and an aldehyde, ketone, or an aromatic solvent. The adhesive polymer system preferably includes one or a blend of polymers that dissolve, at least in part, in the solvent solution. The components of the solvent adhesive are compatible in that they do not separate upon standing. The solvent based adhesive composition provides good adhesion between polymer articles such as, for example, polyolefin and acrylic films, as well as good adhesion between polymeric articles and wood or metal substrates.

The present invention provides a new and improved flame retardant polypropylene composition that exhibits substantially no bloom and plate-out during processing and use. In a preferred embodiment the composition comprises a homopolymer or copolymer of polypropylene, a styrene butadiene compatibilizer, a bromine and phosphorus containing flame retardant additive and a metallocene ethylene copolymer. In addition to displaying excellent color development characteristics, the composition of the present invention displays excellent physical properties and a UL94 rating of V-2.

An ink reservoir is defined by the interior structure and a pair of flexible bag membranes formed of a plastic material impervious to the ink and compatible with the interior member material, allowing the membranes to be joined to the interior member to form a leak-proof joint The interior frame structure is fabricated from a polymer blend composition comprising (A) at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyethylene and a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefin and (B) at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polypropylene and a copolymer of propylene and ethylene, wherein (A) is different from (B). The present polymer compositions provide good chemical and heat stabilities and solvent resistance when subjected to inks used in printing. Further, the present polymer compositions are flexible and have excellent compatibility and adhesion to the various polymeric components used in the ink-jet cartridge.
