This disclosure relates to biomarkers for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and methods of use thereof, e.g., methods of the use of biomarkers for determining that a subject has Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) or determining the stage of AMD in a subject.

Biomarkers for age-related macular degeneration

The disclosure features methods and systems that include: obtaining an input image of an imaging subject, where the input image is a color image featuring, in each of multiple color channels, a first set of pixel intensity values; for each one of the multiple color channels, determining a measured contrast value and a measured brightness value from the first set of pixel intensity values for the color channel, determining a contrast ratio for the color channel based on a target contrast value for the color channel and the measured contrast value for the color channel, and generating a second set of pixel intensity values for the color channel; and generating an output image of the imaging subject based on the second sets of pixel intensity values for each of the multiple color channels.

Image adjustment and standardization

The invention provides a photodynamic therapy-based method for treating ocular glaucoma. A photosensitizer, for example, a benzoporphyrin derivative photosensitizer, is administered to a mammal either having or at risk of developing ocular glaucoma. The photosensitizer, when present in the ciliary body, is activated by light, for example, light from a laser. The treatment results in a reduction of intraocular pressure within the treated eye, which can persist for a prolonged period of time.
