When sharing visible content on multiple display surfaces associated with different users, the hand of a user may be detected and analyzed when placed over the user's display surface. Characteristics of the user's hand, including things such as position, orientation, color, shape, and texture, may be shared with other users. Based on these characteristics, a representation of the user's hand may be depicted over the shared content on the display surfaces of the other users.

Hand-based interaction in virtually shared workspaces

A projection and camera system projects content onto a passive, multi-surface projection screen. When a first surface of the screen is oriented to receive the projected images, the system detects this first surface and projects content associated with that surface of the screen. When a second surface is oriented to receive the projected images, the system detects this change from the first surface to the second surface and projects different content associated with the second surface. In this manner, to switch between different content or different applications, the user merely needs to turn the screen over.

Hand recognition is used to distinguish among users of gesture-based computer systems, and particularly between adults and children. Hands may be classified as adults or children based on certain physical characteristics, such as hand size, shape, or curvature. Depending upon whether the hand belongs to an adult or a child, user-appropriate interfaces are provided. For instance, in response to detecting a presence of a child, the interface may include more child-appropriate features such as simpler graphical elements, use of basic audio interfaces, and so forth.
