A guiding sheath has a hemostatic valve and a central lumen into which a diagnostic or treatment catheter can be introduced and guided into a patient. The hemostatic valve also includes an electrically conducting element or proximity sensing element on its proximal end that interacts with a second electrically conducting element or proximity sensing element on a proximal end of the diagnostic or treatment catheter that can be passed through the central lumen of the guiding sheath and into the patient's heart. The interaction between the two electrically conducting elements or proximity sensing elements enables the location of the distal end of the diagnostic or treatment catheter in the patient's heart without the need for irradiating the patient.

A tool to determine a pre-puncture needle shape to provide a desired approach to a target location based on measured patient anatomy is disclosed herein. Anatomical relationship between an outlet of an access vessel and a desired puncture sight on the interatrial septum is used to determine the pre-puncture needle shape. The tool may be used to provide a recommended preferred needle shape from a collection of predetermined needle shapes (e.g. commercially available needle shapes) and/or recommend a bent shape to which a physician may modify a predetermined needle shape to fit. Additionally, or alternatively, the tool may be used to provide a recommended preferred needle shape to manufacturers to create a bespoke needle shape for a given patient and/or a recommended preferred needle shape for patient cohort having similar anatomy within the cohort.

A catheter configured to guide and support a balloon catheter for use in and around a pulmonary vein and its ostium, has an elongated shaft and a distal assembly, the elongated shaft including a proximal portion with a first flexibility and a distal portion including a second flexibility greater than the first flexibility, the distal assembly including an elbow portion and a generally circular portion generally transverse to the longitudinal axis, the generally circular portion including a third flexibility greater than the second flexibility. Single axis location sensors and sensing ring electrodes are carried on the generally circular portion.

Sensing and mapping catheter for guiding and supporting balloon catheter

An apparatus includes a catheter assembly and an end effector. The catheter assembly includes an outer sheath with a distal end. The end effector is associated with a distal end of the catheter assembly. The end effector includes a panel assembly with microelectrodes for electrophysiological (EP) mapping. The microelectrodes are configured in a matrix within the panel assembly and provide multiple points of contact with the target tissue for EP mapping. The panel assembly can transition between a first contracted state and a second expanded state. The panel assembly can fit within the outer sheath in the first state. The panel assembly can expand outwardly away from a longitudinal axis defined by the catheter assembly in the second state once exposed distally relative to the distal end of the outer sheath.

An electrophysiology catheter includes an elongated support member with shape-memory as a first composite component and an elongated outer tubing as a second composite component, the support member defining a longitudinal axis of the catheter, the support member including a distal portion with a plurality of single-axis sensors, and the elongated outer tubing generally coextensive with the elongated support member, the tubing including a side wall surrounding a lumen through which the support member extends and joins with the outer tubing to form a catheter, the tubing including conductive wires embedded in the side wall and ring electrodes on an outer surface of the side wall, each ring electrode in conductive contact with a respective conductive wire.

Composite catheter with single axial sensors and ring electrodes and related methods

An electrode assembly for use with an electrophysiological catheter has a plurality of independently controlled ablation electrodes distributed radially around the electrode assembly. Two ablation electrodes may be positioned in opposition to each other. The electrode assembly may also have microelectrodes for sensing tissue and/or temperature. Methods for using a catheter equipped with such an electrode assembly may include preferentially emitting energy in a radial direction.

A stabilized coronary sinus catheter system having a proximal section and a distal section with a memory shape portion, and a tip, distal of the memory shape portion. A handle having a body, a tip deflection actuator, a memory shape portion deployment actuator, and an axis. The tip is in line with the axis and the tip deflection actuator is at a first position. The tip is deflected out of alignment with the axis when the tip deflection actuator is at a second position. A third position is a delivery configuration where the memory shape portion and the tip are in line with the axis. The memory shape portion deployment actuator is at a first location. A deployed configuration allows the memory shape portion to form a predetermined shape conforming to the shape of the coronary sinus when the memory shape portion deployment actuator is at a second location.

A catheter is provided with improved position and/or location sensing with the use of single axis sensors that are mounted directly along a length or portion of the catheter whose position/location is of interest. The magnetic based, single axis sensors are provided on a single axis sensor (SAS) assembly, which can be linear or nonlinear as needed. A catheter of the present invention thus includes a catheter body and a distal member of a particular 2D or 3D configuration that is provided by a support member on which at least one, if not at least three single axis sensors, are mounted serially along a length of the support member. In one embodiment, the magnetic-based sensor assembly including at least one coil member that is wrapped on the support member, wherein the coil member is connected via a joint region to a respective cable member adapted to transmit a signal providing location information from the coil member to a mapping and localization system. The joint region advantageously provides strain relief adaptations to the at least one coil member and the respective cable member from detaching.

Multi-layered catheter shaft construction with embedded single axial sensors, and related methods

An ablation system observes and monitors ablation parameters, including temperature, impedance, and/or the system's own closed-loop response to these ablation parameters. The system comprises a catheter with electrodes and a detection circuitry configured to detect an ablation parameter for each electrode, a controller coupled to the catheter, the controller having a processing unit and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processing unit, cause the processing unit to: receive a detected ablation parameter for each electrode from the detection circuitry, determine when a detected ablation parameter violates a defined ablation parameter for each electrode, control a power supplied to each violating electrode to have a reduced power, detect a rate of power reduction for each violating electrode, and stop the power supplied to each violating electrode when a respective detected rate of power reduction exceeds a threshold rate of power reduction.

System and method for controlling catheter power based on renal ablation response

Techniques are disclosed for contemporaneously assessing the success of a renal denervation procedure. One or more characteristics of a patient's heart, such as atrioventricular (AV) interval, PR interval and/or heart rate are monitored during an ablation procedure. A change in the heart characteristic detected during the ablation may indicate successful denervation. Accordingly, successive new locations may be targeted for ablation until a change is detected.

Methods for contemporaneous assessment of renal denervation

A device for restraining a guide wire includes a base having a recessed formation configured to receive a portion of the guide wire, and a flexible lid configured to fit on the base. The lid has a main sheet portion covering the portion of the guide wire and a plurality of fingers separated by gaps and extending downwardly from a peripheral edge of the main sheet portion to surround the base. Sandwiched between the lid and base, the guide wire extends through gaps between the finger members. Constructed of sheet material, the lid is flexibly movable between a closed configuration wherein the fingers are flexed inwardly engaging the base, and an open configuration wherein the fingers are flexed outwardly releasing the base. Alternatively, a clamping device for restraining a guide wire includes top and bottom clamp members and a pivot connection, wherein the top clamp member has a handle end and a securing end and wherein the pivot connection enables the top clamp member to pivot between a closed position restraining the guide wire and an open position releasing the guide wire.

A catheter with ablation and potential sensing capabilities is adapted for outer circumferential contact with an opening of a tubular region and inner circumferential contact within the tubular region. The catheter has a proximal electrode assembly and a distal electrode assembly for ablation of an ostium and potential sensing inside the pulmonary vein so that it is possible to obtain ECG signals inside a pulmonary vein when ablating around the ostium. The distal electrode assembly has an elongated member defining a longitudinal axis and a plurality of spines surrounding the member and converging at their proximal and distal ends, where each spine has at least one electrode and a curvature so that the spine bows radially outwardly from the member. The proximal electrode assembly has a proximal electrode assembly has an elongated member configured with a generally radial portion and a generally circular portion generally transverse to the catheter axis, where the generally circular portion comprising a plurality of electrodes. The control handle advantageously allows a user to manipulate a tensile member for changing the curvature of the spine.
