A low melting aluminum brazing alloy of about 15-25 wt. percent silver, about 15-25 wt. percent copper, about 1-5 wt. percent silicon, about 0-3 wt. percent zinc, about 0-2 wt. percent magnesium, about 0-2 wt. percent iron and the balance essentially aluminum and incidental impurities. Also, a brazing product of this alloy and a method of joining aluminum components using the brazing product.

Low temperature aluminum brazing alloy and process of brazing

Brazing of metal parts employing a low temperature, high strength metal alloy is disclosed. The alloy has a composition consisting essentially of about 6.10 to 6.66 atom percent chromium, about 2.43 to 2.46 atom percent iron, about 10.06 to 25.10 atom percent boron, about 3.22 to 12.85 atom percent silicon and the balance essentially nickel and incidental impurities, the composition being such that the total of nickel, chromium and iron ranges from about 71.68 to 74.58 atom percent and the total of boron and silicon ranges from about 25.42 to 28.32 atom percent. Such an alloy is suitable for brazing .gamma.' superalloys and stainless steels at temperatures ranging from about 927.degree.-1010.degree. C. to provide strong, low cost joints.

Low temperature, high strength, nickel, base brazing alloys

Apparatus is provided for fabricating continuous metal strip composed of a low density, readily oxidizable aluminum based alloy. The allow is cast directly from the melt through a slotted nozzle onto a moving chill substrate. A scraping mechanism located upstream of the nozzle is adapted to ride on the substrate and remove therefrom the gaseous boundary layer associated therewith. Disposed between the scraping mechanism and the nozzle is a gas supply mechanism adapted to introduce a replacement gas that is carried by the substrate to the nozzle. A shielding means configured to form a semi-enclosed chamber around the nozzle and the substrate apparatus to direct and confine the replacement gas in the vicinity of the nozzle. The alloy preferably has the form of a foil and a composition consisting essentially of about 10 to 13 weight percent silicon, 0 to 3 weight percent magnesium, 0 to 4 weight percent copper, 0 to 0.2 weight percent of at least one of bismuth, phosphorous, strontium, lithium, scandium, yttrium, sodium and calcium and 0 to 2 weight percent of at least one of the rare earth elements, the balance being aluminum and incidental impurities.

Low temperature aluminum based brazing alloys

Production of low temperature aluminum based brazing alloys

A lead based alloy is modified by adding thereto a surfactant consisting of about 0.01 to 0.5 weight percent tellurium, about 0.01 to 0.5 weight percent selenium, about 0.01 to 0.5 weight percent selenium plus about 0.1-0.5 weight percent antimony, and mixtures thereof. The alloy is rapidly solidified by forming a melt thereof containing the surfactant addition and quenching the melt on a moving chill surface at a quenching rate of at least about 10.sup.3 .degree. C./sec. Addition of the surfactant lowers melt surface tension and thereby promotes improved wetting.

Wetting of low melting temperature solders by surface active additions

A nickel based high melting point, homogeneous, ductile brazing foil composition consists essentially of about 17 to 20 atom percent chromium, about 4 to 10 atom percent boron, about 10 to 16 atom percent silicon, the balance being nickel and incidental impurities. The composition is such that the total of nickel and chromium ranges from about 74 to 84 atom percent.

Method of making a nickle high-chromium base brazing filler metal

Hardfacing of metal parts employing a thin, homogeneous, ductile foil is disclosed. The hardfacing foil has a composition consisting essentially of 0 to about 32 atom percent nickel, 0 to about 10 atom percent iron, 0 to about 30 atom percent chromium, 0 to about 2 atom percent tungsten, 0 to about 4 atom percent molybdenum, about 5 to about 25 atom percent boron, 0 to about 15 atom percent silicon and 0 to about 2 atom percent manganese and 0 to 5 atom percent carbon the balance being cobalt and incidental impurities with the proviso that the total or iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium, tungsten and molybdenum ranges from about 70 to 88 atom percent and the total of boron, silicon and carbon ranges from about 12 to 30 atom percent. The ductile foil permits continuous hardfacing of soft matrix, like low carbon and low alloy steels, imparting superior resistance to wear and corrosion.

Homogeneous, ductile cobalt based hardfacing foils

Hardfacing of metal parts employing a thin, homogeneous, ductile foil is disclosed. The hardfacing foil has a composition consisting essentially of 0 to about 25 atom percent cobalt, 0 to about 20 atom percent iron, 0 to about 15 atom percent chromium, 0 to about 16 atom percent tungsten, 0 to about 5 atom percent molybdenum, about 2 to about 20 atom percent boron, 0 to about 10 atom percent silicon and 0 to about 5 atom percent carbon, the balance being nickel and incidental impurities with the proviso that the total of iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium, tungsten and molybdenum ranges from about 70 to 88 atom percent and the total of boron, silicon and carbon ranges from about 12 to 30 atom percent. The ductile hardfacing foil permits continuous hardfacing of soft matrix, like low carbon and low alloy steels, and imparts superior resistance to wear and corrosion.

Nickel high-chromium base brazing filler metal for high temperature

A lead based, tin free alloy is modified by adding thereto about 0.5 to 4 weight percent of tin. The alloy is rapidly solidified by forming a melt thereof containing the tin addition and quenching the melt on a moving chill surface at a quenching rate of at least about 10.sup.5 .degree. C./sec. Addition of the tin inhibits formation of lead oxide film in the rapidly solidified alloy and substantially increases the storage life thereof.

The ductile foil permits continuous hardfacing of soft matrix, like low carbon and low alloy steels, imparting superior resistance to wear and corrosion.

The ductile foil permits continuous hardfacing of soft matrix, like low carbon and low alloy steels, imparting superior resistance to wear and corrosion.

Homogeneous, ductile iron based hardfacing foils

A copper based low melting point metal alloy composition consists essentially of about 5 to 52 atom percent nickel, about 2 to 10 atom percent tin, about 10 to 15 atom percent phosphorus and the balance essentially copper and incidental impurities. The composition is such that the total of copper, nickel and tin ranges from about 85 to 90 atom percent.

Homogeneous low melting point copper based alloys

A copper based low melting point metal alloy composition consists essentially of about 2.5 to 11 atom percent tin, about 0 to 12 atom percent nickel and about 11 to 15 atom percent boron, the balance being essentially copper and incidental impurities. The composition is such that the total of copper and tin ranges from about 85 to 89 atom percent.
