The disclosure relates to a blower assembly having a blower housing, an impeller adapted for rotation about an axis A-A disposed in blower housing, and an intake plenum cooperating with the interior first surface of the blower housing to define an air entrance passage for receiving an incoming air flow. The intake plenum includes means to split the incoming air flow into a plurality of air streams and direct the air streams to predetermined portions of the impeller susceptible to stall conditions as the impeller rotates about the axis A-A. The means to split the incoming air may include a splitter plate disposed in the air entrance passage or at least one port defined in a portion of the air intake plenum adjacent the impeller.

An automotive HVAC system includes upper and lower mode cases configured to discharge separate streams of temperature-conditioned air into front and rear passenger zones. The system separates the inlet air into separate mixing chambers, and a third stream through a heater core. Blend doors control hot and cold air streams entering their respective mixing chambers. Operation is controlled by reading requested temperature, blower rate and mode for system zone outlet, converting requests to a flowrate, calculating total flowrate as a summation of all requests, employing a math model to calculate total zonal flowrate as a summation of all zonal flowrates, calculating a blower control error as a function of the difference between total blower request and total zonal flowrate, modifying the operating state using the calculated control error, positioning and resetting the mode valves into defrost, heater and vent openings, and resetting the mode valves.

Un-partitioned HVAC module control for multi-zone and high performance operation

A heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system includes a blower, a fresh-air valve, a bypass duct, and a bypass valve. The blower is configured to urge air to flow from an inlet to an outlet of the blower. The fresh-air valve is operable to provide a mixture of air drawn from an outside-air duct and a recirculated-air duct to the inlet. The fresh-air valve is operable to a recirculate position where the outside-air duct is substantially blocked from communicating with the inlet. The bypass duct is configured to couple the outlet to the outside-air duct. The bypass valve is located in the bypass duct and is operable to a closed position and an open position. The cabin is ventilated when the fresh-air valve is in the recirculate position, the bypass valve is in the open position, and the blower is operated to blow air out of the outside-air duct.

An open architecture HVAC module is disclosed having a housing defining an air inlet and at least two adjacent air outlets. An evaporator and a heater unit are disposed within the housing. A cold air chamber is defined between the evaporator and heater unit, and a hot air chamber is defined downstream of the heater unit. A partition extends into the cold and hot air chambers from an interior surface of the housing between the two adjacent air outlets. The partition is spaced from the evaporator and heater unit. The partition cooperates with the housing to define a first mixing chamber in fluid communication with the first outlet and a second mixing chamber in fluid communication with the second outlet. A blend valve is disposed in each mixing chambers. The blend valves are configured to selectively direct air flow from the cold and hot air chambers to the air outlets.

A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system for a vehicle includes an evaporator and a diffuser. The evaporator is configured to cool air passing through the evaporator. The diffuser is configured to direct a first portion of the air entering the diffuser through a first section of the evaporator, and direct a second portion of the air entering the diffuser through a second section of the evaporator. The evaporator and the diffuser are configured to cooperate such that air exits the first section at a first temperature and air exits the second section at a second temperature less than the first temperature.

Dual temperature HVAC system

A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system and a method of controlling a HVAC system that is configured to provide a perceived comfortable ambient environment to an occupant seated in a vehicle cabin. The system includes a nozzle configured to direct an air stream from the HVAC system to the location of a thermally sensitive portion of the body of the occupant. The system also includes a controller configured to determine an air stream temperature and an air stream flow rate necessary to establish the desired heat supply rate for the sensitive portion and provide a comfortable thermal environment by thermally isolating the occupant from the ambient vehicle cabin temperature. The system may include a sensor to determine the location of the sensitive portion. The nozzle may include a thermoelectric device to heat or cool the air stream.

System and method of providing quick thermal comfort with reduced energy by using directed spot conditioning

A system and a method of controlling a ventilation or HVAC system that is configured to provide an air stream having a comfortable contact velocity to an occupant seated in a vehicle cabin. The system includes a sensor to determine the distance from a discharge nozzle to the vehicle occupant and a controller to control the exit velocity and/or an effective diameter of the nozzle. The sensor may use ultrasonic, infrared, LIDAR, or RADAR technology to determine distance. The system may determine the distance from the nozzle to the occupant based on a seat location determined by a seat location sensor. The seat location sensor may be common to an inflatable restraint (air bag) system.

Air stream velocity control for ventilation system

A heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system is configured for use in a vehicle. A first air moving device blowing air through a heat exchanger provides a first airstream having a first temperature to a second air moving device configured to generate a second airstream having a second temperature that is different from the first temperature. The second airstream is a mixture of the first airstream and cabin air that is drawn from a rear portion of the vehicle cabin. The second air moving device may be disposed in the rear portion of the vehicle. The HVAC system further includes a nozzle that is configured to direct the second airstream toward an occupant in the rear portion of the vehicle cabin to provide spot conditioning.

Heating and cooling system for occupants of the rear portion of a vehicle

A battery pack assembly comprising a plurality of battery packs each including a plurality of cells and at least one metering plate for metering the quantity of air flowing respectively through each of the air paths of the battery packs. An inlet metering plate is disposed upstream of the battery packs to meter the uneven flow of cooling air generated by the inlet manifold. The inlet metering plate utilizes a plurality of apertures, which can vary in size and shape, to produce equal streams of cooling air to cool all the battery packs to a substantially uniform temperature. An outlet metering plate can be disposed downstream of the battery packs to meter the flow of outgoing cooling air through the channels of the upper cylindrical sections to produce equal air flow around all of the cells in a stack to cool all of the cells to a substantially uniform temperature.

An independent mixing valve sub-assembly which includes a casing defining a cold bias inlet, a hot bias inlet and a second zone inlet and a mechanism for mechanically attaching the casing to the housing of a HVAC module with the cold bias inlet, the hot bias inlet and the second zone inlet of the mixing valve sub-assembly in sealing engagement with a cold bias outlet, a hot bias outlet, and a second zone outlet of a HVAC module, respectively. The mixing valve sub-assembly may provide one or more streams of temperature-controlled air. Accordingly, different mixing valve sub-assemblies may be attached to one universal HVAC module to provide varying numbers of temperature zones.

Three embodiments of a heat exchanger assembly for cooling an electronic device are shown respectively in FIGS.-andand each comprises a flange, a dome, a plurality of condensing tubes, a shroud, and a boiler plate. In the first embodiment shown in FIG.the dome is semi-spherical in shape and the distance measured axially along the center axis equals the distance measured laterally from or perpendicular to the center axis. In the second and third embodiments shown in FIGS.and,respectively, the distance measured axially along the center axis is greater than the distance measured laterally from or perpendicular to the center axis. The domes in the second and third embodiments are an ellipsoid and a semi-logarithmic body, respectively. In all embodiments, a plurality of condensing tubes aligned in fan rows and arced rows extend from the dome to distal ends to facilitate more-efficient heat transfer.

Domed heat exchanger (porcupine)

A fluid heat exchanger unit cools an electronic device with a cooling fluid supplied to an upper portion of a cooling housing. A refrigerant is disposed in a lower portion of the cooling housing for liquid-to-vapor transformation. A partition divides the upper portion of the cooling housing from the lower portion. A heat rejecter is disposed on and above the upper wall of the cooling housing with a first header extending from and in fluid communication with the liquid coolant outlet. A second header extends upwardly from a rejecter outlet. A plurality of first tubes extend between and in fluid communication with the first header and the second header with a plurality of first air fins disposed between the upper wall and the first tubes. A single unit defines both the cooling housing and the air cooled heat rejecter to thereby allow the manufacture of the unit in a single process with the attendant reduction in shipping, handling and installation.

Integrated liquid cooled heat sink for electronic components

Two embodiments of a heat exchanger assembly for cooling an electronic device are shown respectively in FIGS.andand each comprises a housing, a plurality of high fins, a plurality of low fins, a nozzle plate, an inlet, at least one outlet, a primary nozzle, and a plurality of secondary nozzles. In the first embodiment shown in FIG.the housing and the nozzle plate are circular in shape. In the second embodiment shown in FIG.the housing and the nozzle plate are rectangular in shape. Both embodiments include a plurality of secondary nozzles that are aligned outwardly of the primary nozzle and the center axis of the nozzle plate. The secondary nozzles direct the flow of the cooling liquid outwardly of the primary nozzle from the center thus creating an overall system pressure drop lower than that of other assemblies without a plurality of secondary nozzles.

Impingement cooled heat sink with low pressure drop

A heat dissipation element for cooling an electronic device is disclosed. The heat dissipation element has a top surface and a bottom surface for mounting the electronic device to be cooled thereto. The top surface defines a heat dissipation area for dissipating heat from the electronic device and a plurality of heat transfer fins project upwardly from the top surface and are coextensive with the heat dissipation area. Each of the heat transfer fins defines a plurality of steps having a rise and a run and each of the steps extend across the heat dissipation area for maximizing an amount of heat dissipated from the electronic device. The heat dissipation element is particularly useful in either one of a cold plate assembly used with a liquid cooled unit (LCU) or a boiler plate assembly used with a thermosiphon cooling unit (TCU).

A fluid heat exchanger assembly cools an electronic device with a cooling fluid supplied from a heat extractor (R, F) to an upper portion of a housing. A refrigerant is disposed in a lower portion of the housing for liquid-to-vapor transformation. A partition divides the upper portion of the housing from the lower portion and flow interrupters are disposed in the upper portion for interrupting thermal boundary layer to enhance thermal heat transfer to the flow of liquid coolant through the coolant passage of the upper portion in response to heat transferred by an electronic device to the lower portion of the housing.
