A method for providing location based intercept in a satellite communications system (10) includes the steps of determining a location area of a party (220), determining whether the location area is one to be monitored (240), and conditionally routing the call to an intercept gateway (250). An intercept gateway (32) is a gateway that intercepts all or part of the calls received, and can also function as a home gateway (30) or a visiting gateway (40).

Method for location based intercept in a communication system

A group radio system (10) uses a group radio controller (230) to connect and manage remote units (20-100) through a wireline switched telephony network. The group radio controller receives voice or data from any of the remote units and repeats this to the others who are connected to the group channel. The group radio controller also assigns remote units in communication with the group channel via satellites (300,400) and other remote units also in communication with the group channel via a terrestrial cellular host network (90) to be anchor radios. The use of anchor radios for these types of users significantly lowers the cost to the group for this type of global radio service.

Method and system for dynamic group radio using existing telephony

In a global satellite communication system (10) that provides antenna beams that move with respect to Earth's surface, gateways (22) send ring alerts directed to subscriber units (26) based on a list of antenna beams. The list of antenna beams is determined by a dot product between a subscriber unit's basis vector and antenna beam vectors. Ring alerts are transmitted in antenna beams when the dot product exceeds a predetermined threshold. Subscriber units listen for ring alerts in the same antenna beams of the list by calculating the list the same way the gateway calculates the list.

Method of identifying antenna beams for transmission of ring alert

A digital cellular telecommunication network (30) uses transcoders (50) which vocode voice using a maximal lossy compression algorithm which conserves spectrum usage. A call path for an intercepted call is looped from an outer space satellite (32) network into a terrestrial gateway (34). Compressed call data for each of two half-calls in this call path are duplicated at any of the network nodes and inserted into the opposing half-call. In addition, the compressed call data are decompressed in a gateway transcoder (50), combined in a conference bridge (90), and routed to a monitoring center (60). A subscriber unit (36), a second device (48), and the monitoring center (60) all receive call data which has experienced only one compression/decompression cycle.

Radio communication network and method for unobstrusive call

A subscriber unit (26) communicates with a satellite (12) using electromagnetic signals so that observations (102) of the signals are obtained. Surface contours are generated (104) based on the signal component measured. The surface contour intersections produce candidate locations on the earth's surface. The candidate locations seed a least-squares estimation to produce final locations. Data produced during the least-squares fit is used to generate confidence ellipses (116) about the final locations. Most likely actual locations are determined from the fit associated with the confidence regions. A variety of signal source measurements can be used while providing a best estimate of a signal source location when an exact solution is not mathematically possible. The location is converted to coordinates that can be used in a satellite communication system (10) for making decisions regarding the granting or denying of communication services, billing rate and the like.

Flexible signal source location apparatus and method therefor

A calibration system utilizing existing location techniques for a global radio telecommunication system 10 autonomously calibrates the communication system's location system by routing precision location data through system 10. Calibration reduces system errors by allowing time slots to remain narrow. The precision data is carried by existing commands throughout the system to measure location errors inserted by satellites 12. A gateway 16 compiles and evaluates received calibration data and determines when to update all gateways 16 with new satellite variance data tables 435. The calibration system provides early warning of degradation of system components and long-term analysis of system performance.
