Methods and apparatus for sealing a threaded container are provided. More specifically, the present invention relates to a ROPP closure with a novel pilfer band that may be used to seal a bottle shaped container without pressing directly against the bottle or deforming the bottle. The bottle includes an annular ring that is novel. Optionally, the annular ring can be formed without die necking or expanding the bottle neck. At least one protrusion which extends inwardly at least partially into the bottle annular ring is formed on the ROPP closure after the ROPP closure is positioned on the bottle neck. In one embodiment, the ROPP closure includes one inwardly oriented protrusion which extends around the circumference of the ROPP closure. The protrusion can be formed by a roller. Optionally, the protrusion has a substantially uniform depth. In another embodiment, the ROPP closure includes a plurality of individuals studs which each extend at least partially into the bottle annular ring. The individual studs can be formed by one or more of a punch, a stud roller, a studded rail, a collet actuated tool, and a cam actuated tool of embodiments of the present invention.

An apparatus and method of making and applying threaded twist-off neck finishes for metal containers is provided. More specifically, the present invention relations to apparatus and methods used to form metallic bottles with threaded necks adapted to receive selectively removable threaded closures. The threaded neck may be formed by interconnecting a threaded outsert to a metallic bottle. Alternatively, the threaded neck may be formed as an integral portion of the neck of the bottle.

The trimmed edge of a drawn and ironed aluminum alloy container body is heated to provide a substantially circumferentially uniform profile in the region adjacent an open end, prior to necking of such region. The temperature profile is sufficient to provide the region to be necked with an annealing temperature, preferably involving a temperature, at the trimmed edge, up to about 550 F. or more, before partial cooling. Annealing in this fashion is believed to improve formability in such a fashion that tensile and yield strength progressively increasing during the necking operations.

The device is a 32&Prime;-36&Prime; fiberglass tubing with a flexible shaft to extend over different bed sizes. The method for necking a metal container body comprises the steps of reducing a first portion of the sidewall of the container body to a first necked diameter, applying force to create tension in at least a portion of a second portion of the sidewall, and further reducing the first portion of the container body to a second necked diameter, during at least a portion of the applying step, by effecting relative motion between the container body and an external forming member. The step of applying a force to create tension in the sidewall may comprise radially displacing at least part of the shoulder portion outwardly away from the central longitudinal axis. Such radial displacement may entail positioning a first rotatable support member inside the container body with a forming radius of the support member longitudinally positioned to be misaligned with the shoulder radius of the container body, and moving the support member radially outwardly away from the central longitudinal axis until at least a portion of the shoulder portion is displaced radially outwardly.

Method for necking a metal container body

The present invention is directed to a novel processing for necking metal container bodies. The process comprises die-necking a container body to a first necked plug diameter, employing one or more operations, and thereafter spin-flow necking the container body to a second reduced plug diameter. The utilization of die-necking advantageously reduces plug diameter variability, thereby enhancing and complimenting the spin-flow necking operation.
