A chiller system includes a compressor, a condenser and an evaporator in fluid communication. A motor drives the compressor. A variable speed drive powers the motor. An oil heater and pump system circulate heated lubricating oil in the compressor. A control panel is arranged to determine whether an input parameter is greater than or equal to a threshold parameter; deactivate the VSD in response to sensing that the input parameter is less than the threshold parameter; determine at least one chiller capacity control parameter at a point when the VSD is deactivated, and maintain the at least one chiller capacity control parameter while the VSD is deactivated; determine that the input parameter has been restored; determine a motor rotation and motor rotational speed; and in response to determining that the input parameter is restored and the motor is rotating in a forward direction, reactivate the VSD.

Variable speed drive control for chiller coast-through

A medium voltage power controller box is mounted on a chiller unit with the other components of the chiller system. The power controller box can be positioned on the chiller system unit to permit the power controller box to be close coupled to the motor, and specifically to the main motor lead exit hub without the need for any power conduit connections between the power controller box and the motor. In addition, the power controller box also does not require any control interface and receives controls from a control panel. A short conduit connection between the control panel and the power controller box is used to provide the necessary connections between the control panel and the power controller box.

A single medium voltage starter box is mounted on a chiller unit with the other components of the chiller system. The starter box can be positioned on the chiller system unit to permit the starter box to be close coupled to the motor, and specifically to the main motor lead exit hub without the need for any power conduit connections between the starter box and the motor. In addition, the starter box also does not require any control interface and receives controls from a control panel. A short conduit connection between the control panel and the starter box is used to provide the necessary connections between the control panel and the starter box.

The present invention is directed to a power transformer and VSD mounted on the chiller equipment. The transformer is preferably a liquid-filled transformer rated for medium/high voltage input, and at least two output low voltages, one voltage for the VSD and other power equipment, and another voltage for the control panel and control equipment. The placement of the power transformer on the chiller eliminates the need to allocate additional floor space for an auxiliary transformer or medium/high voltage VSD. The transformer also includes cooling means in the form of a heat exchanger in which the liquid is cooled by circulating condenser water, chilled water or refrigerant from the chiller system. The cooling means may also be connected to cooling coils connected to the VSD. The size of the power transformer is significantly reduced by the use of the chiller system to remove heat from the transformer while in operation, thereby maintaining the ambient temperature rise of the transformer within its rated operating temperature range. The transformer and VSD heat is discharged to the outside ambient eliminating additional cooling requirements for the equipment room.

A method for repairing an HVAC system is disclosed. The method includes monitoring a plurality of sensors positioned throughout the HVAC system and receiving data associated therewith, determining whether the data received from the plurality of sensors is within corresponding predetermined operational parameters, analyzing data determined to be outside the corresponding predetermined operational parameters to diagnose a malfunction of the HVAC system, accessing an on-board bill of materials to determine a proper replacement part to correct the malfunction, automatically ordering the replacement part, and automatically dispatching a service technician to install the replacement part.

A probe is used to detect axial movement of a rotating part such as a shaft. The probe includes a probe tube portion that protrudes into an annular groove on the rotating part. A gate drive circuit for a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) connected in an a-c power circuit includes a voltage divider network connected between a d-c voltage source and the SCR for developing a varying voltage on a control node, depending upon whether the anode-to-cathode a-c voltage of the SCR is positive or negative. A first switching transistor, responsive to the control node voltage, controls conduction of a second switching transistor connected between the d-c voltage source and a voltage regulated driver circuit. In this way, a constant drive current is applied to the SCR gate only while the anode-to-cathode voltage of the SCR is positive.

A refrigeration system includes a temperature sensor in a freezing compartment, a temperature sensor in a cooling compartment, an adjustable damper controlling the flow of cooled air from the freezing compartment to the cooling compartment and variable speed drives for fan motors and a compressor motor. The desired set point temperatures for the compartment are compared with the actual sensed temperatures through a controller that controls the speed of the compressor and fan motors, to achieve the desired temperature in a fast and efficient manner. When excessive ice is detected on freezing compartment coils, the controller reverses the heat transfer cycle of the refrigerant to defrost the freezing compartment coils.
