A control system for controlling the supply of oil to a turbocharger fitted to an internal combustion comprises an oil supply valve () controlled by a controller () and at least one sensor (-) for monitoring a parameter associated with the existence or potential occurrence of a leak in the turbocharger oil supply, or of a condition potentially resulting in such a leak. The controller () is operable to determine the existence or possible occurrence of an oil leak in the turbocharger oil supply in response to a signal received from the sensor (-) and to close the oil supply control valve () in the event of said determination to cut off the oil supply to the turbocharger.

Turbocharged internal combustion engine

A liner assembly for an internal combustion engine includes a liner bore in an engine block which receives a cylinder liner having an end extension which is received in an annular cylinder head groove. The end extension of the cylinder liner includes a outer circumferential surface thereon which is formed to define a very small gap with the outer circumferential surface of the cylinder head groove; the inner circumferential surface of the upper end is radially spaced from the inner circumferential surface of the cylinder head groove to form an annular seal space for a radial seal that is captured between the upper end and the cylinder head to form an active combustion gas seal between the cylinder liner and the cylinder head. The end surfaces of the upper end of the cylinder liner are spaced axially from the cylinder head when the cylinder head is clamped to seal a head gasket between the cylinder head and the cylinder block of the engine and the cylinder head reacts the seal forces to prevent moments on the cylinder liner whereby the cylinder liner remains undistorted so as to reduce oil consumption and to improve ring and liner wear.

Radial combustion seal

A compression braking system for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a compact housing disposed adjacent the fuel injecting actuating assembly and the exhaust valve actuating assembly for each cylinder of the engine. The housing is provided with a first cavity in which is reciprocally mounted a first piston having one end thereof protruding from one end of the first cavity and being engaged and moved by the fuel injecting actuating assembly. A second cavity is formed in the housing in a proximate angular relation with the first cavity. Reciprocally mounted within the second cavity is a second piston having one end thereof protruding from one end of the second cavity and engaging and moving the exhaust valve actuating assembly to releases compression pressure within the cylinder and provide retarding power when the engine is in the compression braking mode. A third cavity is provided within the housing which forms a linkage passage communicating with corresponding second ends of the first and second cavities. During normal operation of the engine, the linkage passage is substantially void of hydraulic fluid, thus motion of the first piston is not hydraulically transferred to the second piston. When the engine is in a compression braking mode, hydraulic fluid fills the linkage passage thereby causing the motion of the first piston to be hydraulically transferred through the linkage passage to the second piston and effect movement of the exhaust valve actuating assembly.

Compression braking system for an internal combustion engine

A turbocharged internal combustion engine is provided in which the exterior of one side of the engine block has a cavity formed therein. A head is secured to the block and overlies the cylinders formed therein. The head is provided with an internal intake passageway and an internal exhaust passageway for each cylinder formed in the block. One end of each intake passageway communicates with the cavity and one end of each exhaust passageway terminates at the exterior of the head in proximity to the cavity formed in the block. A heat exchange assembly is disposed adjacent the cavity and is provided with a housing which is mounted on the block one side and in overlying relation with the cavity. The housing is provided with an inlet and an outlet spaced therefrom. A heat transfer means is disposed within the housing and is located between the inlet and outlet thereof. The housing outlet communicates with the cavity. The housing inlet, on the other hand, communicates with the charged air outlet of a turbocharger which is located adjacent the one side of the block. The turbocharger is provided with an exhaust gas intake which communicates with the exhaust passageways formed in the head. The charged air entering the housing must pass the heat transfer means within the housing before exiting to the cavity.

1 A dual loop cooling system for an internal combustion engine including a first loop or circuit (36) employing engine lubrication oil for cooling the engine cylinder and a second loop or circuit (48) employing water for cooling the aftercooler and engine head. A first flow control valve (72) and heat exchanger (54) operate to maintain an ideal temperature for the lubrication oil in the range of 200.degree.-250.degree. F. A radiator (86) and second flow control valve (94) in the second circuit (48) operate in response to engine output torque to cause the intake air to be at its lowest temperature at maximum engine output torque and to be at its highest temperature at minimum engine output torque. In one embodiment, the control valve (94) responds to engine water outlet temperature as determined by sensor (104). In another embodiment, a control valve (94') responds to intake manifold air pressure as determined by sensor (106). In yet another embodiment, valve (94') responds to compressor discharge air temperature as determined by sensor (108) to produce the desired transient response.
