A Safety Huber needle assembly comprising a needle used to pierce the septum of an implanted venous port, a baseplate that rests against the insertion site and a pivotally displaceable housing that acts to remove the needle from the septum of the implanted port and to effectively enclose the needle to provide user safety when the housing is displaced to a needle securing state.

A plunger-less syringe and method of use are disclosed. The syringe includes an outer housing fixedly attached to an interior receptacle for receiving a quantity of blood. The syringe has a vent that allows air to escape from the receptacle as blood flows therein. The vent can include a filter for use in preventing blood from exiting the interior receptacle. A vent cap is provided having a recess for mating with a syringe having a plunger, wherein blood flow into the receptacle can be controlled. A plurality of the plunger-less syringes can be packaged in a container, wherein the blood pathway of the syringes is sterilized and without having any exterior sterile packaging.

Plunger-less syringe for controlling blood flow

A splash shield for use in wound irrigation is provided. The splash shield includes at least one outlet area located along its rim so that irrigating fluid may flow from the splash shield. The splash shield is preferably oval-shaped with a substantially flat top adjacent to which is a receiver unit. The outlet area can be formed, for example, by contoured portions or by a generally V-shaped opening, each able to define a channel to enable the escape of fluid from the splash shield. The splash shield may be used in tandem with a syringe having a tip that is positioned in the receiver unit. Additionally, a basin can be provided for use during wound irrigation. The basin includes indentations to accommodate placement of a portion of the human body within the basin and an exit portion such that fluid in the basin can move in the basin to the edge of a table, bed, gurney or the like.

Wound irrigation device

A syringe device for obtaining an arterial blood sample is provided. The syringe device includes a syringe barrel, a plunger assembly having a sealing plug and a filter member. The syringe device preferably includes a carrying device including an anticoagulant and a carrying device body. The carrying device body is made of a hard, non-porous material. The filter member permits the passage of air while preventing the passage of blood. The filter member has a periphery that is in contact with the inner wall of the syringe barrel so that the air does not pass along the inner wall past the filter member. Preferably, the filter member is detached from the sealing plug. During operation, a blood sample from a patient is received in a blood receiving area defined in the syringe barrel, while displaced air passes through the filter member and is substantially contained between the filter member and the sealing plug.

Arterial blood gas syringe including filter member

An arterial blood gas syringe is disclosed for obtaining an arterial blood sample. The syringe is characterized by a sealing plug having channels formed in an upper surface thereof for use in removing air as arterial blood is received into the syringe. Each of the channels extends in a generally radial direction and the channels converge near the center of the sealing plug. A filter element is contained in the center of the sealing plug for permitting the passage of air directed thereto using the channels. The filter element permits the passage of the air but prevents passage of the blood.

Arterial blood gas syringe

Method and apparatus are provided to equilibrate a solution contained in a conventional syringe. The syringe is positioned so that the tapered end of the syringe is upward relative to the flanged end of the syringe. An equilibration tube member is inserted into the tapered end of the syringe. Equilibrating gas of a known composition is delivered to an input cavity formed in a heat block. The equilibrating gas is humidified in a humidifying chamber after it exits the input cavity. The humidified, equilibrating gas then passes into an output cavity formed in the heat block. The equilibration tube member receives the gas from the output cavity and carries it downwardly into the syringe where it exits the equilibration tube member into the equilibration solution. The equilibrating gas passes upwardly through the solution to produce an equilibrated sample. Gas passing from the solution is able to exit the syringe through its tapered end.

Syringe tonometric apparatus and method

This invention relates to an improved plunger subassembly for use in a blood gas syringe barrel characterized by a pushrod having a piston on its front end with a hollow interior defining a fluid collection chamber communicating with both the front and rear ends thereof by passageways blocked by a filter that will pass gases but is impervious to fluids. With the plunger subassembly in its passive state, blood and gas entering the syringe barrel from the front is free to enter the collection chamber by means of slits on the periphery of the piston at its front end. The contaminated blood that has been in contact with the air originally in the syringe barrel is trapped in the fluid collection chamber inside the piston while the gases pass on through the filter and are vented to the atmosphere. Opposed surfaces on the pushrod and piston cooperate to define an air-tight seal effective to prevent the flow of air past the piston when the plunger subassemlby is actuated to retract same.
