A door operator for garage doors is provided which includes a motor, a multiple segmented drive screw and a traveler coupled to and reciprocating along the multiple segmented drive screw. The drive screw segments have non-circular ends which are slidably coupled to each other through a complementary sleeve. Springs are used to bias the screw segments toward one another. The traveler includes a lubricating pad for lubricating the drive screw as it passes along.

Garage door operator

The present invention provides a security system for controlling access of persons through a controlled portal. The portal, such as a door, has a lock mechanism for securing the door. A presence detector senses the presence of an object within an approach zone located substantially adjacent the portal. When an object is detected, a fixed transceiver automatically transmits an interrogation signal into the approach zone. A portable transceiver is carried by the person seeking access to the portal. The portable transceiver responds to the interrogation signal by transmitting a response signal. Each portable transceiver or group of transceivers has a unique identification code which is included in the response signal. The fixed transceiver receives the response signal and determines whether the response signal contains a valid access code. If a valid access code is received, the portal is unlocked and other devices may be activated.

Security system for controlling building access

An automatic door operator with a continuously monitored supplemental obstruction detector. In a first embodiment, the obstruction detector is a radiant beam obstruction detector that transmits a beam of modulated radiant energy across the door opening. A safety signal generator produces an active safety signal only on unobstructed receipt of radiant energy by a receiver. Failure to receive the active safety signal when the motor is closing the door at least stops the door. A two wire cable, which carries both power and the active safety signal, connects the supplemental obstruction detector to the automatic door operator. Constant activation of a portable transmitter or of a local push button can override the supplemental obstruction detector to close the door. An alternative supplemental obstruction detector includes a safety edge having a compressible tube disposed on a leading end of the door. Plural conductors change their conductive state upon compression of the compressible tube. An oscillator sealed within the tube at one end supplies the safety signal. This embodiment may include a delay upon detection of compression of the compressible tube so that contact with the floor is not detected as an obstruction.

Continuously monitored supplemental obstruction detector for garage door

A garage door operator has a light which is turned on for a preset period by the controller each time the operator motor is operated. A pedestrian door is equipped with a magnetic switch which signals the controller when the door is opened, causing the light to be turned on for the preset period. A switch console has a vacation switch, a work light switch and a push button which, with the magnetic switch, send signals to the controller. Voltage level encoding and decoding is used to minimize the number of connecting wires between the console and the controller. The controller comprises a microprocessor subject to the switch inputs and programmed to produce output signals for operator motor control and light control.

Garage door operator with pedestrian light control

A secure, keyless secondary transmitter unit for use in an automatic garage door operator transmits a code set by a code setting device as modified by digits entered at a keyboard. A controller constructs an identification code by inverting bits of the code set by the code setting device that correspond to entered digits. A radio frequency transmitter transmits this altered code in the manner of known automatic garage door operators. Thus operation of keys corresponding to the bits that differ between the receiver code and the secondary transmitter code controls the door. The keyboard preferably also includes an entry complete key indicating entry of the complete digit sequence and a clear key to restart the digit sequence. A lamp connected to the controller illuminates the keyboard upon operation of any key at the keyboard and is turned off if no key is operated in a predetermined period of time. Further operation of the entry complete key within this predetermined period of time causes the controller to again construct and transmit the same code. This secure keyless transmitter unit is believed to be as secure as the primary transmitter units, even when permanently mounted outside the controlled door.

Secure keyless entry system for automatic garage door operator

The present invention is an automatic door operator which includes an obstruction detector for at least stopping the motor when the detected motor speed indicates a motor torque greater than the selected closing torque limit while closing the door, and for at least stopping the motor when the detected motor speed indicates a motor torque greater than the selected opening torque limit while opening the door. The motor speed is detected based upon a predetermined count of electrical pulses corresponding to motor shaft rotation in order smooth noise. Selection of the number of pulses per rotation enables the same controller to control motors operating on either 60 Hz or 50 Hz power. A travel count of rotation pulses permits identification of a plurality of regions in the opening and closing travel of the door and corresponding adaptive torque limits. The travel counter may also be employed for detection of the fully opened and fully closed limits. The controller can be used to control either a four-pole motor or a six-pole motor via a manual motor type selection switch, which selects a torque limit table.

A radio remote-controlled door operator for use, among other uses, as a residential garage door operator. The transmitter contains two buttons, one to produce normal door operation and the other to set the operator into a 'secure' mode wherein it will be non-responsive to further valid operating codes until reset. In addition, a second deeper level of security may be established by means of a vacation switch which disconnects the operator from the AC power supply. The operator system comprises a microprocessor which is programmed to perform various accessory functions even through the accessories may not be present. Various microprocessor inputs are tied to a false 'safe' level so that even though the accessory programs are run, no outputs result and no interference with normal door operation is produced.

A home security and garage door operator system includes a gas sensor for detecting the level of toxic gas in the garage. When the gas level exceeds a predetermined threshold the garage door is automatically opened. Lock out circuitry is provided for preventing the door from being accidentally closed as long as the gas sensor detects an excessive level of toxic gas in the garage. A two button transmitter is used to sequentially close the garage door and set a security alarm subsystem. Warning devices are activated if the security alarm is attempted to be set without the garage door and windows in the home being closed. Once the security alarm has been set, the lock out circuitry also disables the garage door motor control circuitry until the security alarm is first deactivated. The transmitter generates a digital pulse train according to a preselected code, with the operation of the dual buttons changing the state of a particular control bit in the pulse train. A central control module in the garage includes a receiver with channel monitoring circuitry designed to detect the state of the control bit to initiate different functions, for example, the setting of the security alarm and the actuation of the garage door. The system further includes a heat sensor in the central control module and advantageously uses a line carrier to transmit status information regarding the monitored parameters to a remote module in the home. A maximum run timer and motor overload protection for the motor control circuitry are also disclosed.

Home security and garage door operator system

A thermally sensitive switch has a thermally conductive body within which is a chamber into which extends at least one electrically conductive terminal. Occupying the chamber is an elastomeric body which is expansible and contractile in response to increases and decreases, respectively, in its temperature. The elastomeric body may be normally conductive or normally nonconductive, but in either event is conductive when in its expanded condition. When in its expanded, conductive condition, the body engages the terminal and is operable to establish a current path through the body to the terminal. The body may function as an on-off switch or as a rheostat, depending upon the composition of the body.
