A cover (8) and strain relief for an electrical cable assembly (1) has a clamping member (11) adjustable in position to clamp against a cable (3) in an opening (9) through the cover (8), an expansible portion (13) of the cover (8) being expansible to fit substantially around an electrical connector (2) terminated to the cable (3), and the clamping member (11) holding onto the expansible portion (13) to resist its expansion away from being substantially around the connector (2).

An electrical connector (1) having multiple electrical contacts (2) encircled by an insulating housing (3) wherein, each of the electrical contacts (2) is divided into lengthwise halves (4), and the housing (3) is formed by separate housing halves (5), and the electrical connector (1) is provided by combining together the housing halves (5), and combining together the lengthwise halves (4) of each of the electrical contacts (3).

Electrical connector and method of making the same

An electrical plug connector for an electrical connector assembly comprises a dielectric housing having at least one cavity which extends inwardly from a mating face of the housing. An electrically conductive socket contact is disposed in the at least one cavity. The socket contact has a generally tubular shape with inner and outer surfaces and an end face which is disposed in a vicinity of the mating face. A first dielectric member is disposed on the socket contact and extends at least over the end face so as to shield the socket contact from inadvertent electrical engagement. For a socket contact of relatively large diameter, a second dielectric member having a post may be disposed centrally within the socket contact to prevent inadvertent engagement with the inner surface thereof.

A cable connector 10 for high voltage which includes a housing 11 and a protective rear cover 12. The protective rear cover 12 is inserted into the housing 11. The protective rear cover 12 has latching projections 23 formed thereon and the housing 11 has latch apertures 17 to receive the latching means. In a preferred embodiment, the latching projections 23 are formed on arms 21, 22 having flange portions that extend sidewardly and forwardly from the latching projections 23. The arms 21, 22 are received inside the housing 11 adjacent to the latch apertures 17 and cover any spaces of the housing wall latch apertures 17 not filled by the latching projections 23 to prevent arcing through the apertures 17. In another preferred embodiment, a sleeve-like member 34 is disposed over the cable receiving face 13 of the housing 11. The sleeve-like member 34 covers the latch apertures 17 and prevents arcing.

Protective cover for header

A forward housing member for an electrical connector of the type having an array of contacts disposed within a dielectric housing assembly includes a generally planar body section and an array of contact receiving passageways extending therethrough from a forward face to a rearward face thereof, the forward housing passageways having a selected dimension and a selected location. The forward housing member is assembled to a forward face of a discrete rearward housing member such that the passageways are generally aligned with corresponding passageways of the rearward housing member and forward contact sections of the contacts in the corresponding rearward passageways extend in a close fit into the passageways of the forward housing member. The forward housing member defines a mating face of the resultant connector assembly wherein only the forward housing member need be precisely molded for forward sections of the contacts to at least be exposed for electrical connection at precisely located contact positions across the mating face.

A right-angle header (10) includes a main housing (50) and a post locating member (200) securable thereto along a rear face thereof and including an array of post-receiving passageways (222,224,236,238) extending vertically therethrough to a mounting face (30), including post-locating portions at least at the mounting face. Contacts (100,130,140,160) include contact sections (118,120,142) exposed for mating across the mating face, body sections (102,132,144) including a right-angle bend, and post sections (110,110',148) which extend through the apertures of the post locating member (200) and beyond the mounting face for insertion into through-holes of a circuit board (40) upon mounting the header (10) thereto. The post-locating portions of passageways (222,224,242) are referenced to a structure (270) of the post locating member defining a datum, instead of to the passageways (52,54,56) of the main housing and are dimensioned to assure that all post sections (110,110',148) will be positioned to enter even off-center through-holes (36,38) and permit float therewithin of the post sections for incremental lateral adjustment to pass through the through-holes.

A safety shield 10 for a header 11 which has right angle electrical terminals 12. The header 11 has a lateral notch 14 and openings 15 formed therein. The safety shield 10 has a body 20 with a ledge 22 and pins 23 formed thereon. The ledge 22 on the safety shield 10 is received in the notch 14 on the header 11 and the pins 23 on the safety shield 10 are received in the openings 15 in the header 11. Latching fingers 24 formed on the safety shield 10 engage the header 11 to secure the safety shield 10 to the header 11.

An initially integral terminal useful for terminating to flat conductor cable includes upper and lower plate sections coextending from a hinge to define a cable-receiving region therebetween, with first and second portions of both plate sections defining opposed cooperative arrays of termination means for terminating to said flat cable upon said upper and lower plate sections being pressed toward each other and into the flat cable. Upstanding opposed side wall sections join the first and second portions which are otherwise separated by an aperture proximate the center of the flat cable, enabling easy severing of the side walls at the aperture to define separate electrical terminations after application of the assembly to the flat cable. One or two contact sections can extend from a free edge of one of the upper and lower plate sections for connection to another article, defining a mid-cable tap for either single- or dual-connector cable respectively.

An electrical connector assembly includes a metal shell and a plurality of dielectric housings each housing a terminated end of each of a pair of flat cables of the type for transmission of electrical power at substantial current and voltage levels. Each mating terminal pair includes at least one having a contact section having an array of spring arm contact sections deflected by portions of the other when mated. Each termination is proximate a portion of a shell for heat dissipation. One of the shells is adapted for mounting to a bulkhead at a cutout, and the connectors are environmentally sealed to be appropriate for bulkhead mounting. Each connector includes a strain relief assembly suitable for use with flat cables of substantial rigidity and defines a cable exit, all after said terminated cables and housings therearound are assembled into the shell. A jackscrew system is used for facilitating connector mating.

Electrical connector for flat power cable

Housings for terminations or interconnections of flat electrical cable have integral cable-clamping means to compensate for variations in cable thickness at cable exits and can accommodate one or two cables at an exit. The cable-clamping means are integral cable-engaging platforms which upon cable surface engagement as the pair of housings are secured together, are deflectable against spring bias into respective transverse relief slots therebehind. The cable-engaging platforms remain in compression against the one or two cables at the cable exit and provide insulation, vibration resistance and strain relief, protecting the termination or interconnection site.

Housing for an electrical connection

A tap or splice connector especially useful for a pair of dual conductor flat power cables includes two pairs of upper and lower structures which are applied to the stacked in-line cables side-by-side and then enclosed in a housing. The upper and lower structures each have a transverse array of cable-engaging wave-shaped bosses alternating with wave-receiving relief recesses when pressed together, so that the waves press strips of both cables in upper and lower arrays into the opposing recesses thus exposing conductor edges of the strips for electrical connection. Outer surfaces of the structures are then staked to urge the metal thereof laterally and tightly against the conductor edges adjacent thereto. The cables may first be prepared by punching medial slots thereinto at the interconnection site; the structures when applied are spaced from each other; and the housing covers include axial wall sections which extend between the side-by-side structures and through the cable slots, assuring isolation of the circuits. The structures preferably are self-locking upon being staked to secure the upper and lower structures to each other and to the cables. The housing covers may have opposed integral resilient cable-clamping sections to compensate for cable thickness differences.
