A method of deaerating a mixture of fluid and air according to an example of the present disclosure includes the steps of communicating a mixture of a fluid and air into an open area of a reservoir directly against a wall of the reservoir to separate at least some of the fluid from at least some of the air. The reservoir is disposed about an axis of a rotatable shaft, and the reservoir has a curved radially outer wall and a curved radially inner wall joined by curved end walls that face circumferentially relative to the axis. The mixture is communicated against a first one of the curved end walls. The fluid is held within the reservoir after the separating.

A system for filtering mechanically-induced signal noise from a speed sensor may include a rotating member having at least one target group radially oriented about a center of the rotating member, an inductive speed sensor configured to sense the at least one target group, and two diode pairs each having a first diode and a second diode. The two diode pairs may be operatively connected to the inductive speed sensor and configured to receive a signal having the mechanically-induced signal noise. The system may also include a resistor connecting the diode pairs, a processor connected in parallel with the resistor and configured to receive a signal from the inductive speed sensor. The processor may be configured to receive a signal having reduced signal noise via the diode pairs, and determine a rotational speed of the rotating member based on the signal having reduced signal noise.

A gearbox system includes a gearbox having integrated therein a pump system, a plurality of fluid passages and a clutch control system. The pump system is in fluid communication with the clutch control system via the fluid passages to flow at least one pressurized stream. A first pressurized stream controls a first pressure-responsive device included in the clutch control system. The gearbox system further includes a hydro-mechanical control unit (HMCU) in fluid communication with the gearbox to receive a second pressurized stream and to generate at least one actuator control stream. The actuator control stream controls an actuator integrated in the gearbox.

An example method of deaerating a mixture of fluid and air includes communicating a mixture of fluid and air directly against a wall of a reservoir to separate the fluid from the air. The method reuses the fluid held within the reservoir after the separating.

A vent valve according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a sensing sleeve defining a sensing chamber and a vent channel for venting fluid out of the sensing chamber. A sensing piston is moveable within the sensing chamber between an open position and a closed position. The sensing piston allows flow of the fluid into the vent channel during movement of the sensing piston between the open and closed positions.

In one example embodiment, a fluid transfer coupling arrangement includes a hollow shaft that is arranged in a housing and rotatable about an axis. The hollow shaft is provided by a wall having radially spaced interior and exterior surfaces. A first passage extends through the wall and is configured to communicate fluid between the interior and exterior surfaces. A fluid coupling is located mid-shaft, sealed about the exterior surface, and aligns to the first passage. The fluid coupling provides a second passage that is in fluid communication with the first passage. The fluid coupling includes a locating feature configured to permit radial movement of the fluid coupling relative to the housing and allowing the fluid coupling to track subtle shaft movements.

A bootstrap accumulator system includes an actuator cylinder that drives an accumulator piston through a multiple of nested actuator sleeves, comprising a multistage actuator cylinder.

An example accumulator reservoir includes a housing. The housing contains a system fluid chamber, a working fluid chamber, and a residual chamber. Vent paths are configured to vent fluid from the residual chamber. Each of the vent paths extends nonlinearly between a first opening and a second opening.

An assembly includes an output shaft, an input shaft with an internal reservoir, and a clutch. The clutch is adapted to selectively engage and couple the input shaft to the output shaft. The clutch has a pressure chamber that communicates with the reservoir of the input shaft. The reservoir has a sufficient volume to provide the pressure chamber with a fluid pressure adequate to maintain engagement of the clutch during an interruption of a fluid supply to the input shaft and clutch.

An air turbine starter is provided and includes a rotor including turbine blades, which is rotatable about a rotational axis, a housing including a portion thereof radially surrounding the turbine blades to define a pathway along which fluids flow to interact with the turbine blades and a containment ring affixed to an exterior of the portion of the housing radially surrounding the turbine blades.

A bushing for use in a planetary gear system has a cylindrical body portion defining a bore extending along a central axis to be received on a planetary gear shaft. A tab extends axially beyond a nominal body portion of the bushing and is received in a notch in a thrust washer adjacent to the bushing to prevent rotation of the thrust washer. A gear cage and an air turbine starter incorporating the bushing, along with a method of installing the bushing are also disclosed.

A planetary gear system includes a sun gear rotatable about an axis. Planetary gears are circumferentially arranged about and intermesh with the sun gear and peripherally with a ring gear. Each of the planetary gears is supported by a journal bearing arranged in a bore in a carrier wall. A carrier supports the journal bearings and is configured to rotate about the axis and carry the planetary gears. The carrier wall supports the journal bearings and has spaced apart lateral surfaces. A scupper is arranged between the lateral surfaces and provides an inlet in one of the lateral surfaces, in this example facing the sun gear. The inlet has a first circumferential dimension, and a passage fluidly interconnects the scupper to one of the journal bearings via the bore. The passage has a second circumferential dimension less than the first circumferential dimension.

A locking plate for use in an air turbine starter has a lock plate body including an oil slinger extending away from a base. The base is positioned on an outer peripheral surface of a clutch frame. The slinger extends away from the base for a distance, and a ratio of the distance to a thickness of the base is ten and thirty. A clutch and air turbine starter, and a method of assembly are also disclosed.
