A method in an active network element. The network element is coupled with a standby network element by an inter-chassis communication channel used to synchronize session state for sessions handled by the active network element from the active network element to the standby network element. The network element is deployed in a Layer 3 network that is used to transmit Layer 2 data. The method is one of limiting disruption in the handling of the sessions. The method includes monitoring a Layer 2 interface for failures and monitoring a Layer 3 interface for failures. A failure is detected on the Layer 2 interface. The network element communicates with the standby network element, over the inter-chassis communication channel, in response to detecting the failure on the Layer 2 interface, to have the standby network element at least assist with the handling of the sessions.

Method and network element to limit service disruption due to a failure on a layer 2 interface

A system and method for providing communication connection resilience between a mobile subscriber device and a network, such as the Internet. In one aspect, the invention provides improved communication connection resilience by using multiple nodes in multiple chassis to create redundant communication routes and to provide redundancy for control data relating to a mobile subscriber device. In one embodiment, a first node resides in a first chassis and a second node resides in a second chassis, and when an active communication link between the mobile subscriber device and the network via the first node becomes disrupted, the active communication link is rerouted such that data is communicated between the mobile subscriber device and the network via both of the first and second nodes.

System and method for providing communication connection resilience

A method, in a first network element of an inter-chassis redundancy (ICR) system, of cooperating with a second network element of the ICR system to provide ICR. The network elements are coupled by a synchronization channel. IP addresses are announced with a favorable traffic direction attribute. It is determined that the second network element either has announced the IP addresses with an unfavorable traffic direction attribute less favorable than the favorable direction attribute, or has not announced the IP addresses. Sessions that are connected through the IP addresses are handled. Session state synchronization messages that include session state for the handled sessions are transmitted over the synchronization channel to the second network element. It is determined, after an occurrence of a failure event that inhibits the first element from handling the sessions, that the IP addresses have been announced by the second network element with a favorable traffic direction attribute.

Inter-chassis redundancy with coordinated traffic direction

A method within network element, for directing traffic away from cards of first virtual partition, before changing software on cards of first virtual partition, until after cards of first virtual partition have session data, while network element services sessions. Redistribute sessions, serviced by cards of first virtual partition, to cards of second virtual partition. Each of virtual partitions has control card and line card. Direct traffic away from cards of first virtual partition, prior to taking line card of first virtual partition offline. After redistributing sessions, change software on line card of first virtual partition, while cards of second virtual partition service sessions, including redistributed sessions. After changing software, synchronize session data, for sessions serviced by cards of second virtual partition to cards of first virtual partition. Traffic is directed away from cards before changing software on line card, and until after synchronizing session data to cards of first partition.
