A communication unit for a radio communication system comprises a receiver for receiving data over an air interface. The receiver can operate in a first diversity mode and a second diversity mode. The first diversity mode may specifically correspond to no receive diversity being employed and the second diversity mode may correspond to signals from two or more fully or partially de-correlated antennas being combined. The communication unit comprises a data unit which determines a first data characteristic for a section of data to be received over the air interface. A switching unit is arranged to switch between the first diversity mode and the second diversity mode in response to the first data characteristic. The invention may allow improved performance and e.g. reduced power consumption by allowing an improved adaptation of diversity operation. In particular, an improved trade-off between power consumption and performance may be achieved in many embodiments.

Communication unit and method of operation therefor

A method and apparatus for transmitting data in a radio communication system includes a data segmenter () segmenting data into data segments that are fed to a transmission encoder () which encodes them into transmission blocks having different energy per information bit levels. The transmission blocks are transmitter and feedback information is received from the remote radio station (). An analysis processor () determines an analysis group that comprises at least two data segments having transmission blocks encoded with different energy per information bit levels. The analysis processor () further generates a performance distribution measure relating to the analysis group in response to the feedback information. A transmission controller () selects a transmission scheme to apply to subsequent data segments in response to the performance distribution measure.

Method and apparatus for transmitting data in a radio communication system

An apparatus and method of generating downlink power information for a multi-sector base transceiver site in which power can be shared between existing amplifiers includes a first step of gathering (S) downlink power information for each sector. When the total power required by the sectors is less than the total power available from the base transceiver site, a next step includes modifying (S) the information to pre-empt traffic loading such that a more heavily loaded sector will be disproportionately allocated more power than a less heavily loaded sector. A next step includes forwarding (S, S) the information to controllers of the base transceiver site. A next step includes determining a loading of each sector using thresholds to determine an overload in sectors depending on the information, wherein the power to each sector is adjusted disproportional to the degree with which the sector is loaded.
