A mould for the production of closures with tear-off membrane in a compression moulding machine, includes: a male die element including a first abutment surface and a female die element. movable relative to each other along a moulding orientation. The mould is positionable between a closed configuration, in which the male die element and the female die element are in contact with each other, and an open configuration, in which the male die element and the female die element are spaced apart. The female die element includes: a first block, a second block and a third block, aligned with each other and movable along the moulding orientation; a first spring, interposed between the first block and the second block; a second spring, interposed between the second block and the third block and configured to apply an opening force along the moulding orientation. The first spring is configured to apply a closing force along the moulding orientation to keep the second block and the first block in contact with each other when no other forces are applied.

A cutting method and apparatus for closures of the 'tethered' type are disclosed, in which a spindle that carries a closure is moved to a cutting device with one or more horizontal blades and at least one vertical or oblique blade. During cutting, the spindle rotates and the closure rolls on the cutting device. The spindle, which is fed several times to the cutting device carrying each time a different closure, comprises a portion made of a softer material than the blades so that during cutting the blades penetrate the material of the closure and then sink into the softer portion of the spindle. Feeding the spindle that carries the closure to the cutting device is coordinated with rotation of the spindle so that the vertical or oblique blade, each time that the spindle is fed to the cutting device, always meets the same zone of the softer portion of the spindle.

The inner protrusion of the cap has a preset angular position with respect to a circumferential score on a side wall of the cap. Cutting of the cap includes leading the axially protruding projection to a circumferential abutment on the protrusion, leading the contact surface to an axial abutment against the inner central region, and scoring the cap by the cutting device.

A cutting apparatus is provided for cutting a cap as it travels along an advancement path in an advancement direction. The cutting apparatus includes a spindle movable along the advancement path and rotatable around an axis thereof. The spindle is shaped to interact with the cap and to rotate the cap around the axis. A support moves along the advancement path together with the spindle. The support is shaped to interact with the cap and to retain the cap against the spindle. A cutting device is arranged to form a cut in a side wall of the cap when the spindle reaches a cutting zone provided in the advancement path. The spindle includes a hollow housing shaped to house a cap protrusion to stop rotation of the cap in a preset position with respect to the spindle to orient the cap with respect to the cutting device.
