A digital content system enables users of the content system to access, view and interact with digital content items in a safe, efficient and enjoyable online environment. The content system pre-filters an image content item and determines whether the content item is suspicious of having unsafe content, e.g., nudity and pornography. For example, the content system pre-filters an image content item based on the source of the image content item. A content item from a source known for providing safe content is determined to be safe. The content system determines an image content item to be safe if the content item matches a content item known to be safe or if the content item contains less than a threshold amount of human skin. The content system may further verify the content of the image content item with a verification service and takes remedial actions based on the verification result.

Syndicated descriptions of web content are obtained from feeds. For each item of each feed, a link is followed to a content page, and it is determined whether the content page directly or indirectly points back to the feed. If so, the description of the item from the feed is stored as an authorized description with a canonical form of the link to the item. Subsequently, when an item of user-generated content that includes a link to web content is received, the link to the web content is canonicalized. Based on the canonicalized link, any stored authorized syndicated descriptions of the linked content is obtained. If more than one authorized syndicated description of an item of linked content is available, one is selected. Then, the item of user-generated content containing a link can be published with an authorized syndicated description of the linked content.

A method and system for targeting content (e.g., a service or an advertisement) according to location-based information derived from a mobile wireless transceiver device. Position information as a function of time is used to calculate a rate of travel and a direction of travel. This information can be used to identify a likely mode of transportation. Geographical information can be used to further refine the mode of transportation. Thus, in addition to the position of the wireless transceiver devices, factors such as the rate of travel, the direction of travel and the likely mode of transportation are also considered to more precisely identify the appropriate service. Moreover, a potential destination can be predicted, allowing further refinement of the targeted service.

A method and system for restoring basic functionality to a portable computer system via a server accessed remotely by telephone. A user of a portable computer system which has lost data and software which was held in volatile memory may connect to a server to restore basic functionality to the portable computer system. The server may be an enterprise or a web-based server. The connection may be made, for instance, over a 1-800 or a 1-900 telephone line. The server transfers sufficient software to the RAM of the portable computer for it to regain basic functionality. For example, synchronization software may be transferred to the portable computer. The portable computer may then use the synchronization software to synchronize via the server or host connection more fully in order to restore lost data or lost software applications that were stored on a server or on a host computer system. The step of synchronizing to restore lost data and applications may be done with a second server or, in another embodiment, with the same server which helped the portable computer system regain basic functionality. In one embodiment, the portable computer system can be a palmtop computer system.

Embodiments of the present invention include a method and system for a category based user interface for management of information stored on auxiliary storage of a portable computer system, e.g., a PDA. In one embodiment, files can be copied to a removable storage unit by changing the category name to which they are assigned. For example, a game that is stored on the main memory of a PDA can be copied to a memory card by changing the category of the game to a category that is associated with the expansion memory. In another embodiment, the user has the option of keeping the application in two categories or deleting the original instance. For example, after copying a game from the PDA to a memory card, the user can decide if the game will remain on the PDA or it will be removed. Alternatively, an application can also be copied from the expansion memory to the main memory by changing the category of the application to a category that is associated with the main memory.

Systems and methods for resource management are provided. In one implementation a computing system is provided. The computing system includes a controller having an associated information base; the information base including a plurality of resource definitions, a partition definition defining a plurality of partitions, and a plurality of queues. Each partition includes a grouping of one or more resources available to process user jobs and each partition has a name. At least one queue of the plurality of queues is associated with each partition in the partition definition. The controller includes an administrative interface for managing partitions, resources and queues and an authorization routine operable to receive named jobs, a named job identifying a partition in the partition definition, and assign named jobs to an associated partition queue for processing by one of the resources in an associated grouping of one or more resources.

Sharing information between a host computer system and a peripheral computer system. Conduit programs running Simultaneously on the host computer system synchronize information between the two computer systems. The conduits initiate multiple time multiplexed transfers across a single communication link between the two computer systems. In general, one or more conduits can perform a non-transfer task while another can simultaneously perform a transfer over the host-peripheral communication link. The conduits may be used to load software onto the peripheral computer or to exchange e-mail between the two computer systems. While one active conduit is performing a task that does not involve use of the communication link, the other simultaneously executing conduits can use the communication link to transfer records between the host and the peripheral computer system.

The method also includes retrieving a request from the mobile device, the request including a server address. Further still, the method includes retrieving information from the server corresponding to the server address. Yet further still, the method includes placing the information from the server corresponding to the server address into a queue corresponding to a mobile device. Still yet further, the method includes awaiting a wireless link to the mobile device and sending the information from the queue over the wireless link to the mobile device.
