A system, in some embodiments, comprises: a light source; a fiber optic cable coupled to surface equipment and to downhole equipment and illuminated with fixed-wavelength light by said light source; and a modulator to modulate said fixed-wavelength light in the fiber optic cable to communicate data between the surface equipment and the downhole equipment, wherein the modulator uses a modified half-duplex telemetry scheme.

Fixed-wavelength fiber optic telemetry

An example slip-ring interface may include a first section and a second section rotationally independent from the first section. At least one conductor path between the first section and the second section may be selectively associated with and dedicated to the transmission of signals with a first signal type. At least one conductor path between the first section and the second section may be selectively associated with and dedicated to the transmission of signals with a second signal type. If error conditions occur, the signal types associated with one or more of the conductor paths may be changed so that signals of both the first and second signal types are transmitted across the interface.

Redundant, adaptable slip ring

A method for sharing information between components of a subterranean drill string. The method can include receiving, at a controller, data representative of a detected rotational characteristic of a drill string sensed at a first location on the drill string. Further, the method includes calculating, at the controller, a rotational characteristic corresponding to a second location on the drill string based, at least in part, on the detected data, and transmitting data representative of the calculated rotational characteristic to the second location.

Managing rotational information on a drill string

A method for controlling an electrical actuator is disclosed. The method may include driving an electrical actuator at a power level during each of a plurality of actuation attempts and determining whether the electrical actuator actuated during each of the plurality of actuation attempts. The method may also include counting a number of failed actuation attempts, counting a number of successful actuation attempts. In addition, the method may include adjusting the power level based on at least one of the number of failed actuation attempts and the number of successful actuation attempts, and driving the electrical actuator at an adjusted power level.

Optimizing power delivered to an electrical actuator

An orientation sensing apparatus includes a rotatable first member, an orientation sensor device fixed with the first member for generating orientation data relating to an orientation sensor device orientation, and a rotation sensor device for generating rotation data relating to rotation of the first member. A method for determining an orientation includes assembling a set of sensor data including the orientation data and rotation data and processing the set of sensor data to generate a set of corrected orientation data. The set of corrected orientation data includes the orientation data which has been corrected using the rotation data to reduce the effects of rotation of the first member and misalignment of the gravity sensor device. One or more sets of corrected orientation data may be processed to determine an inclination orientation of the first member or a toolface orientation of a second member which is connected with the first member.
