A detection device may monitor emissions from a computing device, which may include radiation and/or radio waves from a computing device. The emissions may be electromagnetic (EM) radiation indicative of operation of components of the computing device. When the emissions reach or exceed an emissions threshold, the detection device may output an indicator. The indicator may indicate a violation of an operational policy that is associated with the emissions threshold. The indicator may additionally or alternatively indicate compliance with the operation policy. In some embodiments, the detection device may be implemented as an accessory such as a case, a cover, a light, or another type of accessory for the computing device.

Detection of device compliance with an operational policy

A computing device may operate in various modes, which may include a full operational mode and a reduced operational mode. When operating in the reduced operational mode, the computing device may reduce power, reduce radiation output, and/or power off various components to achieve operation in accordance with an operational policy. While operating in the reduced operational mode, the computing device may restrict user access to or adjustment of the impacted components thereby preventing the user from restoring the computing device to the full operational mode, at least temporarily. In some aspects, the device may initiate or terminate the reduced operational mode in response to a signal from a beacon, parameters from a monitored environment, or in response to user commands. In various aspects, the device may provide messaging to inform the user about the modes of operation.

Device operation in a reduced operational mode

A user device receives a command to transmit information at a transmit power level specified by a wireless carrier. The user device determines whether transmitting the information at the specified transmit power level using a first duty cycle will cause the user device to violate a condition. Responsive to determining that transmitting the information at the specified transmit power level using the first duty cycle will cause the user device to violate the condition, the user device determines a new duty cycle that is lower than the first duty cycle, and transmits the information using the new duty cycle.

Duty cycling to reduce average transmit power

A user device receives a command to transmit information at a transmit power level specified by a wireless carrier. The user device makes a determination as to whether transmitting the information at the specified transmit power level will cause the user device to violate a condition. When it is determined that transmitting the information at the specified transmit power level will cause the user device to violate the condition, the user device dynamically computes a new transmit power level that is lower than the specified transmit power level. The user device then transmits the information at the new transmit power level.
