White-pigmented and unpigmented base paints and stains are custom-tinted using an automated colorant dispenser having a minimum fluid dispensing quantity less than 0.01 fluid ounce (&#x3c;0.3 cm) and a set of colorants including a green-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison colorant containing 12 wt. % PG7 pigment, a blue-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison colorant containing 12 wt. % PB15:2 pigment, a red-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison colorant containing 17 wt. % PR209 pigment and a magenta-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison magenta-hued colorant containing 7 wt. % PR122 pigment. Light pastel tints in small containers and strong colors in large containers may be prepared without requiring the use of additional colorants having the same general hue and lower color strength.

Expanded color space architectural paint and stain tinting system

A method of generating a set of test sequences for evaluating interoperability of a number of interconnected communication systems with respect to a desired mode of communication between a first end user and a second end user. A number of operational states that are required of the communication systems to implement the desired mode of operation between the two end users is determined, wherein each state pertains to a first operation of a first gateway system associated with the first end user and a corresponding second operation of a second gateway system associated with the second end user. The interconnected communication systems are tested by causing the systems to perform specified transitions between pairs of at least some of the operational states.

Generation of test suites for interoperability of reactive communication systems

A packet communication network is arranged so that a backpressure or feedback signal is sent from a receiving node to a node having packets to send to the receiving,node, selectively allowing only certain packets to be considered eligible for transmission. The backpressure is arranged to be lossless, and to avoid network deadlocks and livelocks. The transmission of a packet p from a sending node Xto a receiving node R, via a link l, is controlled by (a) sending from the receiving node Rto the upstream node Xa feedback value fthat assures that there will be room in the buffer in the receiving node Rto store packets subsequently received from the upstream node X; (b) assigning a priority level &#x3bb;to packets stored in the buffer of the receiving node R; and (c) transmitting from the sending node Xto the receiving node R, only those stored packets at Xwhose priority level &#x3bb;exceeds the feedback value freceived from the receiving node R.

Prevention of deadlocks and livelocks in lossless, backpressured packet networks

A network router is tested for operation according to a given network protocol, by coupling the router under test (RUT) to a test host device and arranging the device to simulate operative test network topologies which include router nodes, network nodes, and edges between the nodes. The device exchanges information packets with the RUT for each of a number of successive test network topologies. Each successive topology is determined randomly by inserting or deleting an edge or a node to or from a prior test network topology in a probabilistic manner. Operation of the RUT under the given protocol is evaluated based on the exchanged information packets. A judgment, e.g., a fault or a no-fault condition, is rendered by the host device.

Testing of network routers under given routing protocols

This invention presents a new &ldquo;Hit-or-Jump&rdquo; system and method for embedded testing of components of communication systems that can be modeled by communicating extended finite state machines. It constructs test sequences efficiently with a high fault coverage. It does not have state space explosion, as is often encountered in exhaustive search, and it quickly covers the system components under test without being &ldquo;trapped&rdquo;, as is experienced by random walks. The algorithm has been implemented and applied to embedded testing of telephone services in an IN architecture, including the Basic Call Service (ECS) as well as other supplementary services.

Hit-or-jump method and system for embedded testing

Discrete tomographic apparatus comprises an electron microscope for irradiating a sample comprising an atomic lattice structure. Line count data is obtained for the main directions of a cross section of the sample. A non-linear programming algorithm is applied to obtain probabilities of occupancy of lattice sites by atoms of the sample. The non-linear programming algorithm comprises an iterative application of the expectation/maximization algorithm upper bounded by the constraint that each variable is valued at less than or equal to one. Once the algorithm is iteratively applied a phantom image of the cross section of the sample is generated. The cross sectional area may be less than one thousand atoms by one thousand atoms.

Method and apparatus for discrete tomography

A base station with a defined geographic coverage area in a wireless communication system includes a base receiver, a base transmitter, and a base antenna array. The base antenna array has a base station beamformer arranged to produce (a) a broad antenna beam so that the base station can receive random access signals from subscriber stations at different locations within the coverage area and transmit beacon or acknowledgment signals to the subscriber stations at the different locations, and (b) a narrow antenna beam directed to an acknowledged subscriber station for receiving or transmitting data or traffic signals from or to the subscriber station. A subscriber station includes a subscriber receiver, a subscriber transmitter and a subscriber antenna. The subscriber transmitter is arranged to transmit signals to a system base station on one or more of a number of carriers having a defined frequency spacing within a given spectrum allotment. A first carrier corresponds to a random access channel on which the subscriber station requests access, and at least a second one of the carriers is selected for transmission of data or traffic from the subscriber to the base station.

Multi-mode/multi-rate fixed wireless communication system

The mobil base station is disclosed having a computer readable storage medium for information and mobil wireless communication circuitry for performing wireless communication with a user in its broadcast area. In a complimentary configuration, the user has a terminal with a computer readable storage medium for storing information and terminal wireless communication circuitry for cooperating with the mobil wireless communication circuitry to facilitate wireless communication therebetween. The mobil base station performs a wireless transfer of information by moving to the user's particular geographical area such that its broadcast area includes the user's terminal. Using the mobil wireless communication circuitry and the terminal wireless communication circuitry, a wireless communication link is established. A transfer of information then occurs between the storage medium of the mobile base station and the storage medium of the terminal via the wireless communication link.

Mobile base station

A method and system are disclosed for determining load on a microcell in a telecommunications network. The network comprises a base station, at least one microcell controlled by the base station, at least one terminal served by the microcell, and feedback between the base station and the terminal. The feedback enables the terminal to provide an up-link signal indicative of a particular down-link signal from the microcell. The method embodiment of the invention involves transmitting a particular down-link signal from the microcell, and receiving an up-link signal from a terminal. Next, a determination is made whether the up-link signal is indicative of the particular down-link signal. If it is, then the load on the microcell includes the terminal. The method and system are particularly useful in CATV networks having a plurality of microcells operating in a simulcast mode. In one preferred embodiment, the microcell transmits the particular down-link signal in a certain pattern, if the up-link signals of the terminal reflect the pattern of the particular down-link signal, then its load on the microcell is confirmed. Once the load of a microcell is determined, then the network may be optimized for capacity and quality. In one embodiment, optimization is performed by altering the RF carrier among the microcells to balance load in the network.

Microcell load measurement using feedback control

For use with an antenna tower, the antenna tower providing a mount for an active antenna that is subject to misdirection when the antenna tower sways, a system for, and method of, dynamically counteracting sway in the antenna tower. The system includes: (1) a rotation detector that senses a rotation, relative to a fixed reference plane, of a portion of the antenna tower proximate the active antenna and develops a sway signal indicative thereof and (2) antenna beam steering logic, coupled to the rotation detector, that receives the sway signal and modifies a drive signal provided to elements of the active antenna to redirect a beam projecting therefrom, the drive signal thereby compensated for the rotation to counteract the sway in the antenna tower. The system may form a portion of a wireless communications station.

System and method for dynamically counteracting sway in active antenna

An improved wireless communication system including a process and apparatus for detecting and preventing fraudulent usage of wireless communication service. The improvement includes a central database in communication with wireless communication networks and paging networks, with the central database being capable of determining when a wireless terminal is being fraudulently used in a wireless communication network. The central database is further capable of sending a paged message to the subscriber notifying the subscriber of the suspected fraudulent usage.

Authentication system and method for preventing wireless communication

A method and apparatus is disclosed for conformance testing of protocols specified as a collection of communicating finite state machines (FSMs). A guided random walk procedure is advantageously used to cover a substantial number of transitions in the component FSMs to determine if the FSM output corresponds to the protocol as specified.

Method and apparatus for testing protocols

A method for synthesizing gateways from formal specifications. We present an efficient procedure that computes protocol converters from formal specifications. This procedure has a polynomial number of computation steps. The method involves computation of a common subset of services. This common subset is used to compute the converter. Conditions under which the converter can be stateless are also described.
