The disclosure provides for a process and polymerization system to produce isoolefin polymers () utilizing polymorphogenates () in the catalyst system to control polydispersity (MWD). The disclosure also provides a catalyst system () comprising a plurality of active catalyst complex species () formed by combination of a Lewis acid (), an initiator () and a polymorphogenate (), as well as polymers made using the catalyst system or process. The polymorphogenate () can promote or mimic the formation of different active catalyst complex species () having different polymerization rates, i.e. different rates of propagation, chain transfer, or termination, as observed by different polydispersities resulting from the presence of relatively different proportions of the polymorphogenate.

A branched isobutylene-styrenic elastomer with a broad molecular weight distribution is disclosed comprising an interpolymer of an isoolefin monomer as isobutylene, a styrenic monomer such as p-methylstyrene, and a multiolefin such as divinylbenzene. The elastomer has improved green strength, relaxation characteristics, and processability in melt processing, while retaining excellent aging characteristics and barrier properties, and can be used in a blend with a linear isobutylene-p-alkylstyrene elastomer to improve processability of the linear elastomer. Also disclosed are a method for processing the linear elastomer with an effective amount of the branched elastomer to improve processability, and nanocomposites, curable compositions, cured compositions and useful articles formed from the branched elastomer and the linear-branched elastomer blends.

The present invention provides a method to form a nanocomposite including blending a high molecular weight elastomer, a low molecular weight elastomer, and a clay to form a nanocomposite; wherein the high molecular weight elastomer has a weight average molecular weight greater than 250000; wherein the low molecular weight elastomer has a weight average molecular weight less than 150000. In another embodiment, the invention provides a method to form a nanocomposite including the steps of blending a low molecular weight elastomer and a clay to form a first mixture; blending a high molecular weight elastomer and the first mixture to form the nanocomposite; wherein the low molecular weight elastomer has a weight average molecular weight less than 150000; and, wherein the high molecular weight elastomer has a weight average molecular weight greater than 250000.
