Embodiments of the present invention provide a surgical cassette with compliant clamping zones to provide more uniform loading. According to one embodiment of the present invention, a surgical cassette includes a clamping portion that is configured to deform to conform to non-uniform load profile applied to the cassette. The clamping portion can include ribs that are sized and made of a suitable material such that the ribs will deflect predictably in the elastic region and flow plastically when the material yield point is exceeded. The use of ribs creates discrete small load areas that will deflect and distort predictably and non-catastrophically at high loads. This allows for the absorption of accumulated tolerances between the clamping mechanism and cassette (e.g., the non-parallelism between the clamping mechanism and cassette) while still providing a distributed load on the cassette.

A surgical system having all of the various pneumatic control sub-systems or sub-manifolds integrally mounted on a common primary manifold. The various required control mechanisms such as valves are likewise integrally mounted to the common manifold and to the sub-manifolds. Within any or all of the sub-manifolds or primary manifolds, volumes of material not necessary for the operation of the manifold are carved or pocketed out and used to form integral accumulators for storing extra pressurized air. The volume of the accumulator can vary according to the pressurized air requirement of the particular manifold, or the overall pneumatic system.

A valve system comprising a valve design in which the valve is normally closed is disclosed. The normally closed valve can comprise a circular valve seal face formed by the underside of a rim of an elastomeric valve boss and a circular valve seat, which is formed by the rim of a through-hole molded into, for example, a plastic cassette, such that the valve seal face, the valve seat, and the through hole are concentric. The valve boss can be a hollow 'mushroom' shaped valve boss, or a conical-shaped valve boss. If no force is applied to the inside surface of the valve boss, no fluid can pass through the valve as the valve seal face rests against the valve seat as a result of the steady free-state load created by the stretch of the valve boss over the slightly longer through hole. When a force is applied to the inside surface of the valve boss, the valve seal face is displaced from the valve seat, allowing fluid between the valve seal face and valve seat and then to pass between the valve boss and the inside surface of the through hole.

The test fixture includes a housing, a first grip, and a second grip. The first grip and the second grip are each configured to clamp onto an upper surface and lower surface of a material coupon. The test fixture also includes an upper input jaw and a lower input jaw each configured to clamp onto the material coupon near a center of the upper surface and the lower surface of the material coupon. The test fixture is configured to load the material coupon in a first direction and a second direction. The first grip and the second grip are each configured to clamp onto the material coupon at a location which accordingly results in a desired testing ratio regardless of a variation in thickness of the material coupon.

A system and method to control vibrations exerted on a non-vibrating structure. The system includes an adjustable variable stiffness support securely attached to both the non-vibrating structure and a vibrating structure. A driver operably associated with the variable stiffness support is configured to selectively adjust the variable stiffness support. A control system in data communication with both a sensor system and the driver includes an algorithm to determine whether adjustment of the variable stiffness support is required.

A surgical system having a console that receives a cassette with a rigid fluid channel formed into a rigid plastic component or housing. The housing serves as a substrate for an elastomeric acoustic coupling that can be formed on the housing outside of the fluid channel. The acoustic transducer is elastically mounted within the console, such as on a spring, so as to provide a relatively constant force between the transducer and the acoustic coupling when the cassette is installed in the console.

The housing serves as a substrate for an elastomeric acoustic coupling that can be formed on the housing outside of the fluid channel by an over molding process. Such a construction method eliminates the need for adhesives to attach the elastomeric acoustic coupling to the housing and ensures the removal of any air from between the elastomeric acoustic coupling and the housing.

A variable stiffness support has a support housing that is configured to adjust the orientation of an internal elastomer assembly. The support housing includes an adjustment mechanism, and the elastomer assembly includes an outer ring that encircles an elastomeric material, a central bushing embedded in the elastomeric material, and a plurality of shims embedded in the elastomeric material in a parallel planar fashion.

A method for operating a peristaltic pump having a molded flow channel contained on an elastomeric sheet that is bonded or mechanically attached to a rigid substrate. The pump head rollers are mounted radially from the axis of rotation of the pump motor and compress the elastomeric flow channels against the rigid substrate. During reflux, the pump head is positioned so that at least one of the rollers compresses the elastomeric flow channel at the input end of the peristaltic pump. Such an operation minimizes the amount of the elastomeric sheet that is exposed to high transient pressures.

Method of operating a peristaltic pump

A continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system is provided by embodiments of the present invention. This continuous high resolution fluid level monitoring system includes a unique fluid level sensor having a point light source, parabolic reflector, sensor array, and detection, processing and control system. The point light source illumines a parabolic reflector wherein the point light source is located at the focus of the parabolic reflector. The parabolic reflector reflects light from the point light source to produce a parallel light curtain. This parallel light curtain is parallel to an axis of symmetry of the parabolic reflector. The parallel light curtain illumines a chamber such as a chamber in an ophthalmic surgical device used to contain surgical fluid. The sensor array coupled to the chamber detects the parallel light curtain illuminating the chamber. The sensor array provides an output to a detection/processing/control system in order to determine the fluid level within the chamber. This optical method of determining the surgical fluid levels may be advantageous in that it prevents physical contamination of the surgical fluids.

Single light source uniform parallel light curtain

A smoking article having reduced ignition propensity is disclosed. The smoking article includes a tobacco column, a wrapper surrounding the tobacco column and a filter element. The wrapper has a base permeability, an untreated area and a least one discrete area treated with a composition to reducing the base permeability. The discretely treated area interacts with a coal of a burning tobacco firecone as it advances to self-extinguish the smoking article. The composition of the treated area includes a permeability reducing substance, a burn rate retarding substance and a burn rate accelerating substance. Either the burn rate retarding substance or the burn rate accelerating substance acts as an organoleptic enhancing substance. In this way a smoker's experience when smoking either the at least one treated area or the untreated area is substantially the same.

Reduced ignition propensity smoking article

A cassette having an elastomeric sheet that is bonded or mechanically attached to a rigid substrate. A flow channel is molded into the rigid substrate that corresponds to a flow channel molded into the elastomeric sheet. The cassette is used in combination with a peristaltic pump having pump head rollers that are mounted radially from the axis of rotation of the pump motor so as to compress the elastomeric flow channels against the rigid substrate during operation. The flow channels molded into the rigid substrate have smooth, fluid lines free from sharp edges and abrupt direction changes and correspond with the fluid channels molded into the elastomeric sheet so as to provide a transition region with a relatively constant cross-section over its entire length that approximates the cross-sectional area of the flow channels molded into the rigid substrate and the fluid channel molded into the elastomeric sheet so that the entire fluid path is of relatively constant cross-sectional area.

Surgical cassette

Embodiments of the present invention provide a system and method for determining the location of the bottom of a fluid chamber in a surgical cassette to calibrate the surgical system. According to one embodiment, the surgical cassette is shaped to allow light from a light source to pass unobstructed to a linear sensor array in an area that is a known distance from the bottom of a fluid chamber. Light rays intersected by solid cassette material, on the other hand, will insufficiently illuminate the linear sensor array. Because the slot is a known distance from the bottom of the chamber, the location of the bottom of the chamber can be determined by determining the transition between illuminated and insufficiently illuminated portions of the linear sensor array.

System and method to zero chambers in a surgical cassette

A mechanism having a pair of pivoting cassette clamping bars. The clamping bars are connected to a pneumatic cylinder or an electromechanical actuator through a series of links and an actuator wheel so that extension and retraction of the pneumatic cylinder or the electromechanical actuator causes the clamping bars to rotate and counter-rotate. The use of a pneumatic cylinder provides smooth, well-controlled movement of the clamping bars.
