A device for inductively charging an electronic accessory includes a first portion, a second portion, and a spacer. The first portion includes a first transmission coil in a first plane where the first transmission coil is configured to generate a first magnetic field, and the second portion includes a first transmission coil in a second plane where the second transmission coil is configured to generate a second magnetic field. The spacer is positioned between the first transmission coil and the second transmission coil and between the first plane and the second plane. The spacer material magnetically insulates the second transmission coil from the first magnetic field.

A connection device for computing devices is described. In one or more implementations, a connection device comprises a plurality of connection portions that are physically and communicatively coupled, one to another. Each of the plurality of connection portions has at least one communication contact configured to form a communicative coupling with a respective one of a plurality of computing devices and with at least one other communication contact of another one of the connections portions to support communication between the plurality of computing devices. Each of the plurality of connection portions also includes a magnetic coupling device to form a removable magnetic attachment to the respective one of the plurality of computing devices.

Thermal management systems and corresponding use methods are described herein. A thermal management system includes components of a computing device. The computing device includes a housing. The housing includes an outer surface and an inner surface. The computing device also includes a heat generating component supported by the housing. The computing device includes a phase change device adjacent or physically connected to the heat generating component. The phase change device includes a first side and a second side. The first side is closer to the heat generating component than the second side. The second side is opposite the first side. The phase change device is compressible, such that when a force is applied to the outer surface of the housing, the inner surface of the housing flexes towards the second side of the phase change device and the phase change device is compressed.

Thermal management systems and corresponding use methods are described herein. A thermal management system includes a thermal dock operable to cool a computing device in physical contact with the thermal dock. The thermal dock includes a housing, a first thermal management device supported by the housing, and a second thermal management device physically connected to the first thermal management device. The first thermal management device is a different type of thermal management device than the second thermal management device.

An electronic device and method is disclosed that determines a fold angle and/or opening state of a foldable electronic device using a self-capacitance measurement of an electrode disposed in the foldable electronic device. Using self-capacitance to determine the opening state provides an accurate result and makes efficient use of power of the foldable electronic device. Further, the technique offers flexibility in the implementation, as it can make use of electrodes, sensors, and/or antennas already present in many foldable electronic devices.

A capacitive sensor pad is co-located with (e.g., overlapping) an RF transmitter without causing significant degradation to the performance of the antenna. In one implementation, tuning the resistance per square in the capacitive sensor pad can provide effective sensor pad range and performance while providing making the capacitive sensor pad sufficiently transparent to radiofrequency waves to provide excellent antenna efficiency, despite the co-location of the capacitive sensor pad and the antenna.

An input device includes an array of adjacent capacitive sensors arranged into rows and columns. Each capacitive sensor exhibits a capacitance characteristic when in proximity to a conductive element. A plurality of mechanical hysteresis mechanisms are each deposited on and in contact with each of the capacitive sensors and configured to be actuated by a corresponding push button. Each capacitive sensor exhibits an electrical characteristic upon actuation of the corresponding mechanical hysteresis mechanism. An insulating overlay layer positioned over the array of capacitive sensors and the plurality of mechanical hysteresis mechanisms defines each push button and defines a surface for accommodating the conductive element.

The devices can be a clamshell smartphone, a messenger device, a thin smartphone, and/or any other suitable mobile communication device. A communications system is arranged for serially chaining multiple portable pendant peripherals to a portable host device. The system enables multiple low power input/output peripherals to communicate over a bi-directional data line with a portable host device such as a PDA or cellular phone. Fixed-length data packets are employed in a store-and-forward approach between the host device and the pendant peripherals. An upstream pendant system component controls a unidirectional clock signal that regulates data transfers to or from the host device and a downstream pendant peripheral. A device identification field associated with the data packet is incremented or decremented as the data packet is forwarded along the pendant bus chain until it reaches its destination.
