A latching valve assembly which controls the flow of air and purge vapor between a fuel module and a carbon canister, where a change in an electrical property of the latching valve assembly is used to detect whether the latching valve is in the open position or the closed position. The latching valve assembly of the present invention eliminates the need for a physical switch solution, mechanical or non contact solutions, eliminates complexity of valve hardware requirements, and only adds minor electric components and software to identify the latch position. This system eliminates valve complexity and mechanical connections required for electrical conductivity.

The internal combustion engine includes at least one cylinder, an exhaust gas tract having a measuring device, and a tank ventilation system having a purge air line, which provides pneumatic communication between the tank ventilation system and the cylinder. The purge air line has a sensor for ascertaining a hydrocarbon content of a gas flow from the tank ventilation system to the at least one cylinder. Fuel metering into the cylinder is controlled dependent on the ascertained hydrocarbon content. An exhaust gas characteristic of an exhaust gas flow that flows in the exhaust gas tract is detected by the measuring device and compared with a specified target value. If the ascertained difference between the detected exhaust gas characteristic and the specified target value exceeds a specified threshold, a test is carried out to determine whether the sensor has a malfunction.

Method and device for operating an internal combustion engine

A valve assembly providing flow control between a fuel tank and a carbon canister, which includes two valves providing two different flow paths, where the first valve provides active vacuum relief along the first flow path, and the second valve provides passive vacuum relief along the second flow path. A reservoir is added to the cap which is common for both flow paths. The second valve has a sealing valve member and a biasable member that passively relieves fuel tank vacuum pressure at a predetermined vacuum level.

A valve assembly for an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system which provides emission control, regulates flow of exhaust gases, and is suitable for gasoline or diesel applications. The EGR valve assembly is a latching valve assembly which reduces power consumption (i.e., continuous electric draw) from the battery while the valve is either being held open or closed, and reduces electrical interference inherent with integrated position sensors. The valve assembly includes a latching mechanism controlled by an actuator which allows a valve to latch open or closed. The valve may be a single stage valve or a multi-stage valve, which includes a latching mechanism that allows for intermediate open positions, and uses of only a short, single pulse of voltage, to change the state of the valve. The actuator may also be held energized at full extend, maintaining a maximum valve open position, creating additional flow capability of the valve assembly.

A purge vapor system, which includes a fuel tank, a fuel tank isolation valve in fluid communication with the fuel tank, and a carbon canister in fluid communication with the fuel tank isolation valve. The purge vapor system also includes a canister vent valve in fluid communication with the carbon canister, an air filter in fluid communication with the canister vent valve, and a latching mechanism for changing the canister vent valve between an open position and a closed position, where the latching mechanism is part of the canister vent valve. The latching mechanism is energized as the latching mechanism changes the canister vent valve between the open position and the closed position, and the latching mechanism is de-energized as the canister vent valve is held in the open position or the closed position.

A valve assembly, such as a canister purge solenoid (CPS) having one or more interchangeable components which may be used to reconfigure the valve assembly to have one or more additional vacuum ports. The design of the valve assembly eliminates the need to mold these ports into the intake manifold, simplifying the design of the manifold, and the tooling needed to make the manifold. The direct mount design of the CPS of the present invention includes at least one additional port to serve as an additional vacuum port to be used for any other purpose, such as a PCV valve, brake booster, or the like.

The fuel tank is sealed by the tank isolation valve between the fuel tank and a vapor storage canister, and the canister vent valve provides sealing between the canister and the atmosphere, and controls venting of the canister. The diagnostic test is performed using the tank isolation valve and the canister vent valve under different operating conditions.

The fuel tank is sealed by the tank isolation valve between the fuel tank and a vapor storage canister, and the canister vent valve provides sealing between the canister and the atmosphere, and controls venting of the canister. The tank isolation valve reduces power consumption from the battery, while the valve is being held in either an open position or a closed position by the latching mechanism, and uses only a single pulse of voltage to change the state of the valve.

A venturi valve assembly, having a flow tube, an upper port integrally formed with flow tube, a flow cavity disposed within the flow tube, an inlet formed as part of the flow tube such that the inlet forms a part of the flow cavity, an outlet formed as part of the flow tube such that the outlet forms a part of the flow cavity, and a venturi nozzle disposed in the flow tube. Pressurized air flows into the flow cavity from the inlet such that the pressurized air flows around the venturi nozzle. Purge vapor flows into the flow cavity from the upper port, and the flow rate of the pressurized air is increased after flowing around the venturi nozzle, increasing the flow of the purge vapor after the purge vapor is mixed with the pressurized air in the flow tube.

High performance vacuum venturi pump

A system which includes a turbo bypass switching valve (BSV) positioned at a beneficial location as a direct mount on an air box to achieve compliance to OBD hose-off requirement via electronic actuation of the BSV and monitoring of the fuel tank pressure sensor for pressure change. When the turbocharger unit is generating pressurized air, the turbo BSV is open, and vapor is passing through the purge valve, some level of vacuum in the fuel tank is sensed. By closing the BSV, flow through the venturi is reduced, producing both less vacuum and a change in fuel tank pressure. The pressure change does not occur if any of the hoses become disconnected. This results in a simple OBD 'venture hose off' check without additional components.

A valve assembly used as part of a vapor purge system, which uses a vacuum created by a venturi nozzle to direct purge vapor from a canister through the purge system, and into an intake manifold. The valve assembly includes a check valve which closes the flow path to prevent the uncontrolled venting of hydrocarbon rich purge vapor directly to the atmosphere, and provides an on-board diagnostic (OBD) check to make sure the system is functioning properly. The check valve is typically open because of a pressure balance around the check valve, allowing the turbo bleed flow, as well as the purge vapor, to pass through the check valve and into an air box. If the hose is disconnected, there is a pressure drop across the valve, which causes the check valve to close, preventing the release of hydrocarbons in the purge vapor to the atmosphere.

A system and method controls a ratio of fuel to gas delivered to an internal combustion engine. Fuel for the engine is stored in a fuel supply. The fuel supply generates fuel vapor that is retained in a canister. The canister is in fluid communication with the engine via a flow path. Hydrocarbon concentration of fuel vapor in the flow path is determined. Pressure drop across a restrictive orifice provided in the flow path is measured to determine a flow rate of the fuel vapor in the flow path. A flow of the fuel vapor through the flow path and to the engine is controlled and injection valves that inject fuel into the engine are controlled so that an amount of fuel injected into the engine is based on the determined concentration of hydrocarbons in the fuel vapor.

A Natural Vacuum Leak Detection (NVLD) device having an articulated poppet to allow the sealing surface of the poppet portion to articulate, or wobble, on the end of a poppet pin, where the poppet pin is mounted to the end of the flange portion. The flange portion has the friction spring, and poppet spring pushing on it. The seal surface of the flange portion is able to move to evenly apply force to the lip seal, and provide a full seal. Because the seal surface of the flange portion is able to articulate, or wobble, the flange portion is able to compensate for misalignment between the poppet stem portion and lip seal.

An evaporative emission control system for a vehicle includes a fuel tank, a vapor collection canister in communication with the fuel tank so as to receive hydrocarbons, a fuel cell in communication with the canister, and a pump constructed and arranged to pump hydrocarbons from the canister to the fuel cell so that the fuel cell can purge the canister by converting the hydrocarbons to water, carbon dioxide and electricity.

Method and system for cleaning a charcoal canister of an emissions system using a fuel cell

An exhaust throttling valve () is provided for a vehicle. The valve includes a body structure () having a bore () there-through. A shaft () is supported by the body structure for rotational movement. A valve member () is associated with the shaft such rotational movement of the shaft rotates the valve member. The valve member is disposed in the bore and is constructed and arranged to rotate between a first position substantially closing the bore and a second position at least partly opening the bore. A hard stop () is associated with the shaft so as to rotate therewith. First and second adjustment structures () are constructed and arranged so that upon rotation of the shaft in one direction, the hard stop engages the first adjustment structure and upon rotation of the shaft in a direction opposite the one direction, the hard stop engages the second adjustment structure, thus limiting travel of the valve member.
