A process for preparing a high gloss retention resin molding formulation comprising a polyester resin and a polycarbonate resin where the process comprises the steps of selecting a desirable colorant which is stable at molding temperatures and has desirable color retention properties when subjected to weathering, determining an optimized concentration of the colorant for maximizing gloss retention properties of the selected colorant by performing weathering test at differing concentrations of the colorant, and optionally determining a suitable gloss enhancing.

Process for colored polycarbonate-polyester compositions with improved weathering

High flow brominated polycarbonates, useful as flame retardant additives for other polymers such as polyesters, are obtained by equilibration of a brominated aromatic polycarbonate such as a tetrabromobisphenol A homo- or copolycarbonate with a di- or polyhydroxy aromatic compound such as bisphenol A, or a diaryl carbonate, and an equilibration catalyst, under conditions such that the weight average molecular weight of the brominated polycarbonate is reduced by at least 35%. Preferred equilibration catalysts are Group I metal carboxylates, such as sodium stearate, and hexaalkylguanidinium salts.

Thermoplastic polymer compositions comprise a thermoplastic copolyether-ester elastomer, a rubber graft polymer and a rigid polymer. The impact modifier may comprise a graft of a vinyl aromatic polymer on a rubbery substrate; a vinyl aromatic-conjugated diene-vinyl aromatic triblock polymer; a carboxylated vinyl aromatic-conjugated diene-vinyl aromatic triblock polymer; a carboxylated alpha-olefin polymer; a copolymer of an alpha-olefin compound and an unsaturated carboxylic compound; a graft of a rigid acrylic polymer on a rubber substrate; a linear low density polyethylene; or mixtures thereof.

Polymer blend compositions comprising a polycarbonate, a graft copolymer and a rigid copolymer exhibit improved low-temperature impact properties. The polycarbonate has a weight average molecular weight, Mw, not less than 35,000 and the rigid copolymer has a weight average molecular weight, Mw, not less than 130,000. The graft copolymer is formed from at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers graft polymerized to a rubbery polymer substrate. The rigid copolymer is formed from at least two ethylenically unsaturated monomers and is compatible with the graft copolymer.
