A fuel swirler plate for improving atomization of fuel in a fuel injector. A plurality of identical fuel supply passages is formed in the plate, each passage including an outer fuel reservoir region; a region having converging walls wherein fuel is accelerated and turned partially tangential to the axis of the plate and fuel injector; a metering region wherein flow is regulated; and an exit region wherein the fuel is combined with similar fuel flows from the other passages to form a high velocity swirl annulus between the swirler plate and a pintle ball of the fuel injector. An advantage of the novel swirl plate over prior art plates is that, when the injector valve is closed, only a very small volume of fuel resides in the swirl annulus between the pintle ball and the exit region of the plate, and such residual fuel is urged rotationally and becomes the leading edge of a new vortex the next time the valve is opened, thus minimizing SAC spray formation. The present invention is useful in fuel cells, burners, and in both direct injection and port injection fuel injectors of internal combustion engines.

Fuel swirler plate for a fuel injector

An anti-rotation clip for joining a fuel injector body to a fuel rail socket. A C-shaped base is formed to slide into an annular groove in the injector body. A pair of tangs extend from the base to straddle a rib on the injector body to prevent rotation between the clip and the injector. Opposed sidewalls extending from the base include windows for receiving a radial flange of the fuel rail socket to correctly position the fuel injector axially within the socket. Each window is divided by a locking bar for reception in a notch in the socket flange to prevent rotation between the clip and the socket. The radial positions of the injector rib and flange notch are selected such that the injector will be properly oriented with respect to the engine after installation therein.

Anti-rotation fuel injector clip

An electromagnetic fuel injector having improved wear characteristics comprises a body having a fuel inlet and a fuel outlet. A valve seat is sealably connected to the body, and a moveable valve member positioned at the fuel outlet for controlling the flow of fuel from the outlet comprises a valve outlet element that provides a sealing interface with the valve seat. The valve member and included valve outlet element further comprise wear surfaces that are subject to repeated impact and/or sliding contact; at least a portion of these wear surfaces comprise an applied layer of diamond-like carbon (DLC) stabilized by inclusion of greater than 30 weight percent of a carbide-forming material selected from the group consisting of silicon, titanium, and tungsten.

Coated fuel injector valve

A method and apparatus for interfacing graphically with a user of a computer system having selecting means, and display means, which identifies a relationship structure between physical objects and activities external to the computer system which are related to the information to be manipulated in the computer system. At least one data structure is created which corresponds to the identified relationship structure. A plurality of on-screen objects which correspond to information identified in the physical objects and activities external to the computer system is displayed on the display means. A user selection is detected among the displayed on-screen objects, where each on-screen object has initial size and position states. Intermediate and final size and positions states for each on-screen object are prepared according to the data structures. The on-screen objects in their intermediate size and position states are animated on the display means, until finally the on-screen objects in their final size and position states are displayed according to the data structure. Also disclosed is a system for interfacing graphically with a user.

Interactive graphical user interface

An electromagnetic fuel injector has an upper, middle and lower body. A solenoid and guide tube are mounted within the middle body. A plug is mounted within the guide tube. The armature moves from its lower position when the solenoid is not energized to its upper position. There are two air gaps which are closed when the armature moves to its upper position, one between the armature and a stop shoulder on the middle body and the other between the armature and the plug. During assembly, the plug is inserted partially into the guide tube. Next, the armature is inserted into the guide tube. The armature is pushed upward until it contacts a stop on the middle body. The armature and the plug then stop moving. Because the plug is in a tight fitting relationship with the upper body, it remains in place when the armature is moved back to its lower position. This positions the plug such that the two air gaps are equal. The second air gap is positioned between the top and bottom of the solenoid. A spring is positioned between an adjusting member and the armature. A flat disk spring is between a spacer and the lower body. The armature is located on one side of the spring and the pintle is located on the other side. The middle body, solenoid and armature are reversible and can be used in an outwardly or inwardly opening injector.

Dual gap fuel injector

An electromagnetic fuel injector has an orificed fuel director plate, mounted downstream of a solenoid actuated valve and an associated main orifice passage opened and closed by the valve, to receive fuel when the valve is pulled to an open position from its associated valve seat for controlling and directing flow from the injector. The upper surface of the orifice director plate is provided with a fuel distributing channel system terminating in separate pairs of cooperating injection orifices that are disposed adjacent to one another to direct adjacent jets of fuel which partially intersect one another producing discrete cones of atomized fuel accurately onto separate fuel intake valves of a piston cylinder of an internal combustion engine.

Dual spray director using an 'H' annulus

In an evaporative control system for reducing emission of fuel vapors from an engine fuel system there is provided a vacuum operated valve arrangement having a two-position valve which is spring biased to open to permit venting of fuel vapor from a carburetor fuel bowl to a carbon canister when the engine is not running and is responsive to engine vacuum only above a predetermined negative pressure to close to prevent such venting when the engine is running, and a check valve and bleed valve arrangement which is operable to trap engine vacuum at the two-position valve at a vacuum at or above the predetermined negative pressure whenever the engine vacuum drops below such pressure to thereby maintain the two-position valve in its closed position preventing fuel vapor venting during engine running at low engine vacuum and operating to release the trapped engine vacuum at the two-position valve to thereby permit the valve to open to permit fuel vapor venting when the engine is not running.

Vacuum operated valve arrangement

A vacuum actuated switch has a pair of snap action contacts which are actuated in response to the operation of two vacuum motors. One vacuum motor controls the opening and closing of the contacts in a first predetermined range of vacuum. The other vacuum motor extends the range of operation to a second and larger predetermined range of vacuum wherein one limit of the second range is the same as the first range.
