A technique for detecting a defective printhead nozzle employing acoustical energy. During printhead maintenance, the nozzles of the printhead are sequentially fired to eject ink therefrom. The acoustical energy emitted by a nozzle during ejection of an ink droplet can be detected by a sound receiver. Acoustical energy can also be transmitted in the field of travel of the ink droplet so that when the ink droplet passes therethrough the acoustical energy is perturbated, and such perturbation can be detected. The perturbation can be an attenuation of the received acoustical energy when the ink droplet passes between the acoustical transmitter and a sound receiver. The perturbation can also be a change in the acoustical energy when the ink droplet reflects acoustical energy from the acoustical transmitter to the sound receiver.

Detection of missing nozzle for an inkjet printhead

A modular print engine assembly for a peripheral comprises an upper paper support, a tray base, the upper paper support pivotally connected to one of the tray base or an extender disposed between the upper paper support and the tray base. The extender allows the modular print engine to be utilized across multiple print models or platforms with housings of various shape and size.

Automatic sheet feed extender for paperfeed modularity

A trough support rib for improved edge-to-edge printing having a media feedpath extending in a first direction, a printhead reciprocally movable in a second direction, the second direction defining a print zone, an ink trough, at least one support rib beneath the print zone within the ink trough, the at least one support rib having an upper angled edge for engaging print media defined by two beveled surfaces, the rib further including a notch for removal of overspray ink to the ink trough.

An imaging apparatus includes a printhead carrier for mounting a printhead cartridge. The printhead carrier includes a carrier back wall having an upper portion. A back portion of a printhead cartridge cradle is connected to the carrier back wall. A first proximal end of a latch lever is pivotably attached to a front portion of the printhead cartridge cradle. The latch lever has at least one cam follower, with each cam follower being located near the first distal end of the latch lever. A second proximal end of a carrier lid is pivotably attached to the upper portion of the carrier back wall. Each cam of the carrier lid is formed near a second distal end of the carrier lid, and each cam is positioned for progressive engagement by a corresponding cam follower as the latch lever is moved from an open position toward a latched position.

Printhead carrier for an imaging apparatus

A method of monitoring gaseous accumulation within an ink flow path in fluid communication with a printhead comprising: (a) supplying a first printhead with ink using a first ink flow path; (b) mounting a first ink filter in fluid communication with the first printhead; and (c) sensing downstream from the first ink filter for gaseous components within the first ink flow path. In addition, the invention provides a printing device comprising: (a) a first printhead that includes a first set of nozzles, a first ink filter, and a first conduit between the first ink filter and the first set of nozzles for delivering filtered ink to the first set of nozzles; and (b) a sensor operative to detect at least one of bubble formation and bubble growth within the first conduit.

Gaseous detection for an inkjet system

An imaging apparatus includes a housing, and a media support mounted to the housing for supporting at least one sheet of print media. A guide device couples the media support with the housing. The guide device defines a guide path having a proximal end and a distal end. The media support is configured to move along the guide path. The media support is moved in a direction from the proximal end toward the distal end when the media support is moved from a stowed position to an extended position. A pivot mechanism is located near the distal end of the guide path to facilitate a pivoting of the media support so as to be inclined in relation to the guide path when the media support is pivoted from the extended position to an operating position.

Media support for an imaging apparatus

Some embodiments of the present invention provide an inkjet printhead within which a removable ink cartridge can be installed. Upon installation, the ink cartridge can be coupled to one or more wicks in the printhead for establishing fluid communication between one or more chambers in the ink cartridge and nozzles through which ink exits the printhead during operation. The wick can extend from a cartridge receptacle to a filter in order to transport ink from the removable cartridge to the filter. In some embodiments, the wick is retained in place within the printhead by a cap, which can be coupled to one or more filter towers. The wick can have upstream and downstream interfaces that can be the same or different in shape and/or size.

Wick for an inkjet printhead

An ink jet printer includes a frame, at least one flexible ink tube and a trough connected to the frame. The trough has a longitudinal length oriented in a first direction and a planar ink tube receiving portion oriented at an acute angle from a vertical axis. At least a portion of the flexible ink tube is disposed along at least a portion of the planar ink tube receiving portion.

Off-carrier tubing layout

A printhead gap adjustment mechanism for use in an imaging apparatus includes a worm gear coupled to a carrier shaft to transmit a rotational motion to the carrier shaft. A worm screw is positioned in rotational cooperation with the worm gear, the worm screw having an axis of rotation. A first cam is coupled to the carrier shaft. A first cam follower surface is disposed in proximity to the first cam. A guide device guides the carrier shaft in a translational direction substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the worm screw. A rotation of the worm screw transmits rotational motion to drive the first cam via the worm gear and the carrier shaft, the first cam engaging the first cam follower surface to effect a translational motion of the worm gear in the translational direction, thereby effecting a movement of the printhead in the translational direction.
