A method is provided for providing protection for connectionless signals in a telecommunications network comprising a plurality of nodes. A first protection path is generated from each of the nodes to a destination node. A second protection path is generated from each of the nodes to the destination node. The second protection path is distinct from the first protection path. Protection traffic is routed along one of the protection paths to the destination node.

Method and system for providing a protection path for connectionless signals in a telecommunications network

A method of communicating connectionless and connection oriented signals using at least one common network element includes receiving connectionless and connection oriented signals from a plurality of source peripheral network elements and determining a signaling type associated with each signal, the signaling type comprising connectionless signaling or connection oriented signaling. The method further includes appending a transport label to each signal, each transport label comprising an indication of the signal's signaling type, and communicating the signals and appended transport labels toward destination peripheral network elements according to signaling procedures associated with each signal's signaling type.

A transport network includes a flexible topology for internally defining transport elements. The transport elements each include a port group having a plurality of geographically distributed ports from the transport network. Point-to-multipoint connectivity is defined between the ports in a port group. In particular embodiments, the present invention provides an apparatus for controlling a signaling link. The apparatus includes a plurality of receivers and a plurality of drivers. Each receiver receives signaling messages from one of a plurality of first signaling links, and each driver sends signaling messages over one of a plurality of second signaling links. The apparatus also includes an interface that receives signaling messages and control data from a control module and sends signaling messages and control data to the control module. The apparatus further includes a processor coupled to the receivers, the drivers, and the interface. The processor receives signaling messages from the receivers and multiplexes portions of the signaling messages together for communication through the interface. The processor also receives portions of signaling messages from the interface and demultiplexes the portions for communication to the drivers.

Method and apparatus for controlling signaling links in a telecommunications system

A method of providing a back up communications link for control messages within a delivery unit. The primary means of transport for both network data and control data within the delivery unit is by means of ingress and egress buses between application modules of the delivery unit. However, control messages from a unit controller can also be delivered by means of a separate link, typically to a bus control module.

The unit controller is partitioned into &ldquo;generic&rdquo; units, that can be easily configured for use as a line/trunk processor in an OC3 delivery unit.
