A sleeve can be used as a stop collar on tubing. A fusible element disposed about the inside or outside surface of the collar can be accessed by electrodes via the at least one access point in the collar. An insulator insulates the fusible element from the collar, while the electrodes apply electric current to the fusible element. A fusible material of the fusible element is heated to melting in response to the applied electric current and affixes the collar to the tubing with a metallurgical bond formed from the melting and re-solidifying of the fusible material inside a space between the first circumferential surface of the collar and the opposing circumferential surface of the tubing. The fusible material can be heated to melting directly with the electric current, or an ignitable material activated with the electric current can melt the fusible material.

Structures for a tool surface of a downhole tool are constructed from a metal clay molded in a wet state. The wet state clay is a workable combination that can have a braze alloy grain, a tungsten carbide grain, and a binder. Additional cutting inserts can be embedded in the molded clay. Heat treatment applied to the molded metal clay causing the binder to be combusted and consumed. The braze alloy melts and then cools into a fused state with the tungsten carbide grain therein. The structure can affix to the tool surface of the tool by first being fused and then attached by brazing to the tool. Alternatively, the structure can be positioned in a fusible state adjacent the tool surface. When the heat treatment is applied, the structure fuses together and forms a metallurgical bond with the tool surface of the tool.

A method of separating a downhole tubular includes running a tool into a wellbore to a predetermined location on a work string and actuating flow actuated slips. The method also includes maintaining slips in a set position by providing a first upward force on the work string. The method further includes rotating the work string to separate an upper portion of the tubular from a lower portion using a cutter assembly disposed on the work string below the slips and pulling the upper portion of the tubing and the tool from the wellbore.

Wellbore apparatus for setting a downhole tool

A method of positioning a bottom hole assembly in a wellbore includes lowering the bottom hole assembly into the wellbore. The bottom hole assembly has a whipstock, a downhole tool, and a cleaning tool having a cleaning element. The method also includes cleaning at least a portion of a wall of the wellbore using the cleaning tool, and activating the downhole tool to engage the cleaned portion of the wall.

A bottom hole assembly can include a mill and a whipstock having an upper end and an opening. A retractable pin extends from the mill into the opening. A section of the whipstock is separable from the whipstock in response to a force applied to the mill. The section is positioned between the opening and the upper end. A method can include positioning a bottom hole assembly in a well, the bottom hole assembly including a whipstock releasably secured to a mill, and then releasing the mill from the whipstock by separating a section of the whipstock from a remainder of the whipstock. Another method can include conveying a bottom hole assembly into a well, setting an anchor, then applying pressure to a hydraulic release mechanism, and then applying a force to the mill, thereby separating a section of the whipstock from a remainder of the whipstock.

A method and apparatus for a locking system for a downhole tool. The locking system includes a first portion having a plurality of displaceable members, a second portion disposed around the first portion; a locked position wherein axial movement between the members is prevented; and an unlocked position wherein axial movement between the members is permitted.

A sidetrack assembly for forming a lateral wellbore includes a cutting device having a body having a passage, and a mill head configured to connect to the body so that an interior of the mill head and the body form a pressure chamber in fluid communication with the outlet passage. The mill head includes a first port in fluid communication with the pressure chamber, a second port in fluid communication with the pressure chamber, and a blade arranged on a face of the mill head. A whipstock connected to the cutting device includes a tubing having a first end removably inserted in the first port and the passage and a second end connectable to a downhole tool, an inclined surface for guiding the mill at a non-zero angle relative to a central axis of an existing wellbore, and an attachment section removably connecting the cutting device and the whipstock.

A bottom hole assembly for use in a wellbore includes a whipstock; a downhole tool coupled to the whipstock; and a cleaning tool coupled to the downhole tool for cleaning a portion of a wall of the wellbore, wherein the downhole tool is configured to engage the cleaned portion of the wall. In one example, the cleaning tool includes a body and a plurality of cleaning elements for cleaning the portion of the wall.

A method of cutting a tubular includes providing a rotatable cutting tool in the tubular, the cutting tool having a blade with a cutting structure thereon; extending the blade relative to the cutting tool; rotating the cutting tool relative to the tubular; guiding the cutting structure into contact with the tubular; cutting the tubular using the blade; and limiting extension of the blade.

Methods and apparatus for releasing a lead mill of a BHA from a whipstock in a wellbore include slideably releasing the BHA from the whipstock without relative rotation and without destruction of a retractable bolt. A system includes: a bias mechanism; a retractable bolt at least partially disposed in the bottom hole assembly and biased to a retracted position by the bias mechanism; and a retraction actuator capable of selectably opposing the bias of the retractable bolt. A method includes: coupling a whipstock to a BHA with a retention system, including: a retractable bolt biased to retract into the BHA; and a retraction actuator configured to resist the bias of the retractable bolt; and after the whipstock and BHA have been disposed in a wellbore, activating the retraction actuator so that retraction of the retractable bolt ensues.

A method of manufacturing a seal element can include depositing a seal element material from an instrument at a location of the seal element, and depositing another seal element material from the instrument at another location of the seal element, the seal element materials being different from each other. A sealing system can include a seal element, the seal element having at least one seal element material about at least one void in the seal element, the seal element material enclosing the void. Another sealing system can include a seal element, the seal element having multiple different seal element materials deposited at respective multiple different locations in the seal element. Properties or characteristics may gradually change or vary from one seal element material to another seal element material in the seal element. The seal element materials may each include the same basic matrix material.

A method of manufacturing a gripping element can include depositing a gripping element material, and thereby gradually building up the gripping element and forming a gripping surface thereon, the gripping surface being configured to grippingly engage a well surface. A gripping system can include at least one extendable gripping element configured to grip a well surface, and the gripping element including a gripping element material enclosing one or more voids in the gripping element. Another gripping system can include at least one extendable gripping element having a gripping surface configured to grip a well surface, and the gripping element including at least two gripping element materials deposited to form the gripping element. Properties or characteristics may gradually change or vary from one gripping element material to another gripping element material in the gripping element. The gripping element materials may each include the same basic matrix material.

A method and apparatus for cutting and pulling a casing string from a well. A downhole casing pulling tool includes a tubular housing having a bore therethrough, a packer assembly configured to isolate an annulus between a casing and the tool, a slip assembly configured to engage the casing, and a piston assembly disposed in the bore of the tubular housing. The piston assembly is configured to operate an actuator, wherein the actuator is configured to operate at least one of the packer assembly and the slip assembly and modify a fluid pressure in the bore of the tubular housing.
