A positioning device includes a computer including a stored design file, such as a CAD file, for positioning a selected portion of the design on a workpiece. In a first embodiment, a base unit houses an extensible cable including a free end for placement by a user at a design point on the workpiece. A turn carriage freely rotates about a turn axis to follow cable movement. In output mode, the user is directed to move the cable free end toward the portion of the design and a cable tensioning motor adjusts the tension in the cable sufficiently to indicate when cable free end is at a distance to the portion of the design. Other embodiments include: a turn carriage servoed motor for rotating the turn carriage to follow the cable; and a pitch carriage and servoed motor for rotating the pitch carriage for following the cable.

Positioning device with extensible cord and method

An interface component is provided for use in combination with a clamp or compressive tool imparting a compressive force against respective planar contact surfaces of two components being joined at a miter joint. The interface features an elongated member having a projection projecting away from a top surface in a substantially circular path. The curved surface provides a means to redirect the compressive force communicated against said curved surface to the miter joint at a substantially normal angle.

A method preparing for tiling a surface generally includes the steps of: measuring the surface with a cable measuring device to produce a digitized plan of the surface; displaying a plurality of possible tile layout for the surface on a display of a computer containing the produced digitized plan and programmed to display tile layouts for the surface depending on parameters including tile size, grout width, and tile orientation; selecting a tile layout, and placing the selected tile layout on the surface with the device. The method may include using the device for placing cut lines on the tiles.

Method of preparing for tiling a surface

The method uses a cable measurement and cable positioning or laser projection device to measure a structure to produce a digitized design of the structure and to put the design on a panel by laser pointer projection or by cable positioning so that the panel can be marked and cut for fitting on the structure.

A measuring device generally comprises a base unit housing an extensible cable; the cable including a free end for placement by a user at a point being measured. The base unit, placed in line of sight of the point, includes: a base; a first carriage rotationally attached to the base about a turn axis; and a second carriage rotationally attached to the first carriage about a pitch axis. Servoed motors rotate the carriages to align them with cable path to the point. The turn angle, the pitch angle and the cable length are measured to determine the point's location. A plurality of points determines a surface. The user uses a programmed PDA with a radio to communicate with the base unit. An alternative embodiment only has a first carriage.

Measuring device with extensible cord and method

A device for measuring the length of a cable under tension moved through the device generally comprises a frame, a measuring pulley rotatably mounted on the frame; an anti-slip device for rollingly holding the midsection of the cable in a non-slipping manner against the measuring pulley such that movement of the cable rotates the measuring pulley, and a rotation sensor for sensing the rotation of the measuring pulley and producing a signal indicative of the rotation thereof. The anti-slip device generally comprises one or more loading rollers and a loading assembly including a flexible tension member for applying loading to the loading rollers such that movement of the cable rotates the measuring pulley. A location measuring device incorporating the cable length measuring device determines the direction and distance from the location measuring device to a free end of the cable.

A measuring device generally comprises a base unit housing an extensible cable; the cable including a free end for placement by a user at a point being measured. A closed ink replenishment system for replenishing the supply of ink in negative pressure spring-bag reservoirs in a printer/plotter. A tube runs between each cartridge reservoir and an auxiliary reservoir mounted to the printer/plotter frame to form the closed ink system. As ink is depleted from the spring-bag reservoir during printing operation, the negative pressure in the cartridge increases, drawing ink through the tube from the auxiliary reservoir into the cartridge until the negative pressure decreases to an equilibrium point. As a result, the volume of ink within the spring-bag reservoir remains substantially constant so long as there is ink remaining within the auxiliary reservoir. This maintains the print quality. The auxiliary reservoir is a flat bag mounted on a spring-biased platform, which acts as a height regulating system. As ink is depleted from the auxiliary bag, the height of the platform and bag increases to maintain a constant pressure and elevation head at the spring-bag reservoir.

An ink-jet cartridge is formed by a rigid outer protective case and an inner ink reservoir having a flexible wall portion and a rigid wall portion which together form a sealed compartment. The flexible wall portion includes two opposing membranes sealed at their periphery to an inner loop-like frame which is integrated with a portion of the outer case. The outer protective case also covers a snout having a shortened length in the media advance direction to allow media positioning rollers closely adjacent to the print zone. The snout includes internal filters in an ink passageway from the reservoir to print nozzles at the end of the snout.

An inkjet printhead is mounted on a cartridge which has an outer casing member, an inner collapsible reservoir formed by non-elastic flexible walls, and an internal spring means inside the reservoir for creating negative pressure in the collapsible reservoir during the filling and storage of ink in the collapsible reservoir as well as during the dispensing of ink from the collapsible reservoir to the printhead.

Negative pressure ink delivery system

A thermal ink-jet pen cartridge having a rigid external frame member fabricated of a rigid engineering plastic, and an interior frame structure attached thereto, formed of a softer, more ductile plastic material than the rigid engineering plastic. An ink reservoir is defined by the interior structure and a pair of flexible bag membranes formed of a plastic material impervious to the ink and compatible with the interior member material, allowing the membranes to be joined to the interior member to form a leak-proof joint The interior frame structure is fabricated from a polymer blend composition comprising (A) at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyethylene and a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefin and (B) at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polypropylene and a copolymer of propylene and ethylene, wherein (A) is different from (B). The present polymer compositions provide good chemical and heat stabilities and solvent resistance when subjected to inks used in printing. Further, the present polymer compositions are flexible and have excellent compatibility and adhesion to the various polymeric components used in the ink-jet cartridge.

A method for designing a second ink-jet cartridge characterized by a datum structure, an ink reservoir system and a printhead structure, given a first cartridge design, wherein the printhead structure of the two cartridges are different. The method uses a common datum structure and ink reservoir system for both the first and second cartridges, to save on development and tooling expenses. The cartridges differ in the shapes or configurations of the headland structures, the flexible interconnect circuits, the nozzle plates, the ink channels or the printhead substrates.

The gimbal (40) supports the horn (100) such that the horn (100) can rotate about horizontal X and Y rotation axes and can translate in the Z-direction relative to the frame (20). A pivot rod (140) includes a bearing surface (144) bearing against horn (100) such that the horn may rotate about the X-axis and Y-axis and for applying downward pressure to the horn. The shape and orientation of the bearing surface (144) corresponding to the shape and orientation of the contact area of horn (100).

A pressure head (10) for contacting a workpiece (230) through relative movement in the vertical Z-direction includes a frame (20), a horn (100) for contacting the workpiece (230) and a gimbal (40) connected to the frame (20). The gimbal (40) supports the horn (100) such that the horn (100) can rotate about orthogonal X and Y rotation axes and can translate in the Z-direction relative to the frame (20). Three adjustment arms (170) movably connected to the frame (20) each apply a force on the horn (100) at points determining a plane for rotating the horn (100) about the X-axis or the Y-axis to a fixed position before contact with the workpiece (230). The adjustment arms (170) also provide electrical connection to electrical devices (136, 138) on the horn (100). A movable contact arm (190) connected to the frame (20) also contacts the horn (100) for providing an electrical connection.
