Seat centric airbag restraint systems having pelvis restraint features, along with related methods. In some implementations, a first seat-mounted airbag cushion may be deployed along a first side of a vehicle occupant and a second seat-mounted airbag cushion may be deployed along a second side of the vehicle occupant. At least one wrap-around belt engaging at least one of the first and second seat-mounted airbag cushions may be released, either partially or fully, to inhibit forward translation of the vehicle occupant within a vehicle seat.

Seat-centric airbag system with active pelvis restraint

Overhead airbag cushions are disclosed suitable for installation to a vehicle having an alternative seating arrangement, e.g., 'campfire' or “living room” style seating wherein vehicle seating positions face each other. The overhead airbag cushion deploys from above a vehicle seating position to be disposed to receive at least a head of an occupant of the vehicle seating position. A reaction surface of the overhead airbag cushion may engage a roof, a windshield, or other structure of the vehicle to limit deflection of the overhead airbag cushion during loading as the occupant impacts the overhead airbag cushion. Internal and/or external tethers may assist in positioning and supporting the overhead airbag cushion.

The present disclosure describes a roof-mounted airbag apparatus in a vehicle. The vehicle includes a roof, an instrument panel, and two passenger seats in a front row. The airbag apparatus includes an inflator and an airbag that is fluidly coupled to the inflator. The airbag is inflatable and deployable from the roof in an interior of the vehicle between the passenger seats and the instrument panel, and includes a cavity.

An airbag includes a U-shaped chamber, a head-impact chamber, and an uninflatable panel. The U-shaped chamber has a first side leg, a second side leg, and a top extending from the first side leg to the second side leg. The head-impact chamber is disposed between the first side leg and the second side leg. The uninflatable panel extends from the first leg to the second leg adjacent the head-impact chamber.

In some implementations, a first seat-mounted airbag cushion may be deployed along a first side of a vehicle occupant and a second seat-mounted airbag cushion may be deployed along a second side of the vehicle occupant. A first pelvis restraint chamber may be deployed below the first seat-mounted airbag cushion at an angle relative to the first seat-mounted airbag cushion and towards a first upper thigh of the vehicle occupant. The first pelvis restraint chamber may inhibit forward translation of the vehicle occupant within a vehicle seat by tensioning the pelvis region of the occupant.

Seatbelt assemblies for motor vehicle occupant restraint providing enhanced frontal impact restraint characteristics. Embodiments illustrated a displacement of the intersection positioned between the lap and shoulder belt portions of an active three-point type belt system. In one set of embodiments particularly useful with dual retractor systems, adaptive positioning provisions allow the point of intersection to initially occur at or near the seatbelt latch plate and when a restraint load occurs components release to allow repositioning of the intersection. In other embodiments best implemented in single retractor systems, a turning loop is provided which displaces the webbing slot separating the lap and shoulder belt sections from the buckle latch plate.

The airbag assembly is disposed partially within the seatback and partially within a headrest whereby a lower attachment and an upper attachment of an inflatable airbag cushion couple the inflatable airbag cushion at multiple points to properly disposed the inflatable airbag cushion forward of the occupant.

Airbag assemblies, such as overhead airbag assemblies, comprising overlapping pass-through chambers. In some embodiments, the assembly may comprise an airbag cushion configured to deploy from a vehicle roof structure and a head contact chamber configured to engage a head of an occupant of the vehicle upon deployment. An opening may be formed within the airbag cushion adjacent to the head contact chamber and may extend from a first surface of the airbag cushion configured to engage the occupant to a second surface of the airbag cushion opposite the first surface. The opening may be smaller along one or more dimensions than the head contact chamber upon deployment such that the head contact chamber cannot enter the opening without engaging one or more portions of the airbag cushion defining the opening.

An occupant restraint system for a seat of a vehicle. The occupant restraint system includes at least a first airbag deployable and at least a first tensioning member. The first airbag is deployable from the seat. The first tensioning member has a first portion for receiving inflation gases and a second portion attachable to the seat at a mounting location. The tensioning member including a least a first webbing elongated between the first portion and the second portion. The first webbing is at least partially constructed of a first inflatable tubular webbing adapted to receive inflation gases for tensioning the tensioning member and delivering inflation gases to the airbag upon airbag deployment.

An occupant restraint system for a seat of a vehicle includes an airbag and an external tensioning member. The airbag is deployable from the seat and includes at least one cushion vent hole for venting inflation gases from the airbag. The tensioning member is attachable to the seat and includes at least a first webbing elongated between a first end and a second end. The first webbing including at least one webbing hole such that each cushion vent hole of the at least one cushion vent hole has a corresponding webbing hole from the at least one webbing hole. A releasable connection releasably connects the first webbing and the airbag to normally maintain alignment between each cushion vent hole and the corresponding webbing hole in response to a predetermined tension in the tensioning member to misalign each cushion vent hole with the corresponding webbing hole.

Occupant restraint system for a vehicle seat including adaptive venting

Multi-chambered side airbag assemblies are provided. The airbag assemblies can include a housing, an inflator, and a side inflatable cushion. The side inflatable cushion can include multiple chambers, for example, a first inflatable chamber coupled to the housing, a second inflatable chamber coupled to the first inflatable chamber, and a third inflatable chamber coupled to the second inflatable chamber. The side inflatable cushion can also include a connector coupling at least two of the inflatable chambers to each other. In a deployed state, at least a portion of the side airbag may protrude transverse to a longitudinal axis of a vehicle such that a portion of the side airbag is configured to receive a vehicle occupant moving from a vehicle occupant position during a vehicle impact event.

Multi-chambered side airbag assemblies

A vehicle seat includes a seatback, a headrest and an airbag unit. The seatback has a front side and a rear side. The headrest is connected to the seatback by at least one post and is adjustable relative to the seatback in a vertical direction. The airbag unit is carried by the seatback and includes an airbag and an inflator. The airbag is rearwardly deployable from the rear side of the seatback from a stored position proximate an upper end of the seatback. The at least one post is oriented relative to the airbag unit in a position selected from a group consisting of a first position in which the at least one post includes a lower end vertically above the airbag unit with a line along an elongated axis of the at least one post intersecting the airbag unit and a second position on which the at least one post is laterally spaced from the airbag unit.
