A polyamide resin useful in the preparation of hot-melt inks for ink-jet printing is prepared by the condensation polymerization reaction of a monoamine, a diacid and a third reactant selected from diamines, aminoalcohols and blends thereof. Preferably, the diacid, monoamine and third reactant are reacted together in mole ratios of 2:2:1. The polyamides afford the ink compositions with a low viscosity at the elevated operating temperatures of an ink-jet printer, yet are solid at room temperature and contribute good adhesion to the printed substrate.

Ink-jet printing compositions

A process for the preparation of a carene-dienophile diadduct in high yield is provided. Delta-3-carene is reacted with a Diels-Adler dienophile, preferably maleic anhydride, at a dienophile:carene molar ratio of at least 1.5:1 and a temperature of at least 150.degree. C. The diadduct produced by the reaction of delta-3-carene and a Diels Alder dienophile, preferably maleic anhydride, is useful as a curing agent in epoxy resin systems.

Process for the preparation of delta-3-carene diadducts

Diadducts of gamma-terpinene and Diels-Alder dienophiles are prepared in high yield by contacting dienophile and gamma-terpinene in a preferred molar ratio of at least about 2:1 at elevated temperatures. The resulting reaction product generally comprises at least about 80% diadducts and no more than about 20% monoadducts. Preferred dienophiles include maleic anhydride.

Gamma-terpinene diadducts

Copolymerization of beta-phellandrene with maleic anhydride, preferably in the presence of a free radical initiator such as AIBN, to form high molecular weight polymers (weight average molecular weight over 1,000) is disclosed. The polymerization may be conducted at a temperature up to about 190.degree. C., preferably in the range of about 40.degree. to 130.degree. C., preferably in the presence of a polar solvent.

Beta-phellandrene-maleic anhydride copolymers

Copolymerization of isoterpinolene with maleic anhydride, preferably in the presence of a free radical initiator such as AIBN, to form high molecular weight (weight average molecular weight over 1000) polymers is disclosed. The polymerization may be conducted at a temperature up to about 190.degree. C., preferably in the range of about 40.degree. to 130.degree. C., preferably in the presence of a polar solvent.

Isoterpinolene-maleic anhydride copolymers

Copolymerization of maleic anhydride with the resin acids present in rosin, especially abietic-type resin acids (e.g., abietic acid and neoabietic acid), to form high molecular weight copolymers is disclosed. The polymerization is carried out in the presence of a free radical initiator such as AIBN. The temperature can range up to about 190.degree. C. and a solvent such as THF can also be present.

Copolymer of resin acids and maleic anhydride

Novel water-based ink compositions, suitable as flexographic and gravure inks, are disclosed which incorporate high molecular weight resin acid-maleic anhydride polymers. The ink compositions of this invention comprise a coloring agent and a resin vehicle which comprises an aqueous solution of the reaction product of rosin and maleic anhydride in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator.
